Sawmill Nears Completion at Connorville Plant

State Relief Costs Double Says Director
State relief costs for welfare on the Michigan rolls have doubled in the past year. William Haber, state relief administrator, said the average monthly cost per dole family rose from 16 to as high as 32 dollars. He urged revising poor laws to distinguish chronic paupers from unemployed workers and emphasized re employment over relief. Sixty percent of unemployment stems from reindustrial depressions, twenty percent from unable bodied job seekers, and twenty percent from the aged or disabled, with pensions recommended for the last group.

Reino Mattson, 19, of Wakefield, is to be arraigned Saturday in Bessemer circuit court on a serious charge connected to an incident at the Community Building Thursday afternoon. He escaped in a truck, fled toward Ramsay, was tracked to Bessemer and arrested. The defendant has two prior terms on similar charges and was released on probation from the state reformatory only weeks ago.
