GUS Bowden a safety inspector for Pickands Mather on the Gogebic range retires after over 50 years in iron mines. George Gerry of Hurley succeeds him as supervisor and Bowden will aid in advisory capacity during departmental administration in Upson Wis. He began work at the Odamah mine in Hurley in 1911.
The couple plan to visit here soon with relatives and will also visit Milwaukee and Indianapolis after Selda, their daughter, finishes war work in Seattle during the past year.
A nuptial high mass was celebrated at St Ambrose church in Ironwood by the Rt Rev J P Moriarity for the marriage of Sam Jane to a bride taught by Helen Louise, with her sister Mrs Walter Partamen serving as matron of humor and Miss Betty Mezzano in attendance.
Mrs. Mary Kuiawa was the honored guest at an 85th birthday party hosted by her son-in-law and daughter. Somers in 500 was awarded to Mrs. Ed Smidt and Mrs. Louis for notable contributions.
The Art Group of the Wakefield Woman's Club invites the public to an informal tea Monday from 8 to 10 p.m. in the Memorial Building. Proceeds fund the club’s donation to the Art Building at Interlochen Michigan. A musical program features, with Alice Holloway of Ironwood presenting artwork and flower studies in oil and watercolor. Bring a friend.
Four Wake circuit court sessions are scheduled next week to determine veterans rights under the preference act. Judge T. J. Field will preside in Landers. World War II veterans are among those affected.
To Continue Work post in its plans to use the Community Building gymnasium for a service men center. Plans for the renovation of the quarters will be obtained at once. In the meantime the work of constructing a new outside entrance to the quarters will be completed.

Mrs R C Mahon Iron River presented The Atomic Bomb lecture at Memorial Community Building on Wednesday night. Sponsored by the Woman's club the talk covered 1939 beginnings factory labs materials and dangers, wartime use, Hiroshima observations and calls for peacetime control by Congress. The speaker urged America to set an example for humanity and urged use of atomic energy for good. Misses Erickson and Jacquart could not attend due to snow. Luncheon followed with committee chairs listed.
The Wakefield volunteer firemen handled 30 calls in the year, earning $271 for services. Property fires amounted to $2,170. Fire Chief Celeste Buccanero cited house fires caused by defective wiring and a chimney as the reason for two blazes. Carl A. Johnson answered 25 calls.
Deputy collector William L. Reitmeyer of federal revenue to assist taxpayers at Wakefield city hall February 20 and 21. Other sessions listed include Watersmeet Enji Watersmeet Mar enisco Ramsay Bessemer and Ironwood post office from February 18 to March 1.
Mr and Mrs Stannard observe their silver anniversary with congratulations and a delicious lunch. They wed February 7 in the copper country and settled in Wakefield after their honeymoon. Mr Stannard serves as cashier at the First National Bank and received well wishes from his parents Mr and Mrs W L Stannard.
