Former Commissioner Alfred Harju Dies After Hospital Stay
Alfred Harju, former Wakefield city commissioner and county supervisor, died Monday morning following hernia surgery at Wakefield General Hospital. Funeral services are set for Saturday at the Finnish Lutheran Church, with Rev. Nilo Korhonen officiating. Harju, born February 1, 1891, lived in Wakefield, attended local schools, and worked at the Sunday Lake mine. He served 1961 to 1980 in public office and was married to Hannah Carr in 1914. five children survive along with his father, step-mother, two brothers, two sisters, and several relatives.
