Local man killed in blast at Newport shaft
Kino Mattila of this city died an hour after a premature blast at the Newport shaft in Ironwood. Four fellow workers were injured, with Erwin Becker most seriously hurt. Becker, Scavarda, Hiske Natti, and Victor Haapala were hospitalized. Becker’s condition improved later. The blast disrupted tamping pressure and no wires connected to holes. A crew of 14 miners worked the new shaft for Youngstown Mines Corp for a year. Mattila was born April 3, 1906, survived by parents Mikko and Mrs Mattila, wife, two sons, and three sisters. Funeral set for Monday at the Finnish Lutheran Church.

School Board Meets Monday Evening at Senior High
