A long cold spell eases with brief above zero days noted as a sign of winter turning. February 1962 includes Leap Day and historical dates while readers share dog stories, local council moves on cemetery and library concerns, plowing rules, and a Wakefield mutual insurance bid.
Alan Harju of Wakefield earned a B S degree in Biology with honors and Dean's List honors at NMU on January 15 in Marquette. The ceremony drew the largest mid semester graduation class in NMU history with Mr and Mrs Axel Harju and their son Dana joining Elmer and David Sturkol in attendance.
George Luckow is appointed Vice-President Finance by Gordon P. Connor of Connor Forest Industries in Wausau Wisconsin. He holds an MBA from Northwestern and a BEd from Whitewater State University. Luckow formerly partnered at Lybrand Ross Brothers and Montgomery and advised Connor Forest for over twenty years. He is a member of major accounting bodies and active in United Fund, Boy Scouts, and church activities. The Luckows will move to the Wausau area with their two children.
The American Legion Auxiliary gathered with Mrs. Roger Sailer leading. Mrs. Jack Kujala opened with a prayer and the group reported full membership quota at 66 members. They read acknowledgments from Mrs. Garnet Trudgeon and the Iron Mountain VA Gift Shop and discussed funds, donations, and fundraising for a new Legion addition. Girls State is set for June 11 to 18. next meeting is February 23 with hostesses Mrs. Arnold Swanson and Mrs. Kujala. A social hour followed with prizes awarded to Mrs. Swanson and Mrs. Marie Schiltz.
Mrs James Morrison 87 of Ewen died Friday after illness at Gogebic Medical Care Facility. Born Laura Meisbauer December 3, 1884 in Oshkosh she married Pete Linder in 1904 and James Morrison in 1912. Surviving Albert Linder two brothers a sister two grandchildren and six great grandchildren. Funeral at Sacred Heart Church Ewen with burial in Ewen Cemetery.
The Immaculate Conception Catholic Church schedules a 5:00 p.m. potluck and social at Father Daniel Hall on Sunday February 13 with entertainment and a Yugoslavian guest appearance. Attendees should bring their own tableware and assist with cleanup. Altar Society provides coffee and dessert. Prize winners will be announced. Volunteers should report by 3:00 p.m. to prepare tables and coffee.
The Rock and Mineral Club meets Feb 10 at 7 30 pm in the high school cafeteria. Ruth Guild of Immanuel Lutheran meets Feb 14 at 2 pm at the church with hostesses Mrs Elmer Johnson and Mrs Oiva Koivula. The Youth Choir of First Lutheran meets Feb 3 at 3 39 pm and Senior Choir Feb 5 at 6 30 pm. Worship Service with Holy Communion Feb 5 at 7 pm. Weekend guests: Mr and Mrs Theodore Warren of High Bridge with their daughter and husband Arvi Ahonen family. Mr and Mrs Robert Tetzlaff and son Todd returned to Pulaski after visiting Gust Seppa and family.
Eugene R. Maki of Wakefield was elected Local Board 28 chair. Earl W. Litshheim of Ironwood named vice chair and Robert W. Johnson of Ironwood secretary. Joseph C. Bria of Bessemer was appointed to fill a vacancy and has long public service including postmaster at Bessemer since 1968 and combat veteran with Purple Heart and Bronze Star.
Immanuel Lutheran held a congregational meeting January 19 at 7 00 pm led by Rev Wallace Leno. Five men John Koski David Johnson Wilbert Pikka Carl Nelson and Wesley Rautiola were elected to the Church Council and installed January 30. Officers include President Pastor Leno vice president Wilbert Pikka secretary Dwight Lundeby treasurer Mrs Kenneth Pikka and financial secretary Harvey Elliott. The 1972 budget of 14700 was adopted and worship time changes approved. The congregation will celebrate its 50th anniversary this year with plans to be formalized.
Dean David G. Lindquist announces first semester 1971-72 Dean's List. Seven students earned 4.0 or straight A averages, including Dianne Pretti of Wakefield in Liberal Arts. Wakefield students with 3.5+ include Jerome Franck Emilie Karling and Mary Ann Rando. James McKenzie of Marenisco also listed. In Vocational Technical James Haapapuro of Wakefield, and in Practical Nursing Lee Charlevoix of Wakefield made the honors.
Miss Ann Susan Pachmayer and Jerry L. Wuorinen exchanged vows in a double ring ceremony at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Wakefield. The bride wore satin brocade with pearl detailing and a floor length A line skirt, and carried a cascade of yellow roses. Attendants included her sister Amelia Pachmayer as maid of honor and Jane Lawrence Marquette as bridesmaid. Best man was David A. Elliott. groomsman Hans Anderson. About 300 guests attended a Lake Shore Veterans Hall reception before a belated wedding trip. The couple will reside in Marquette.
Mrs John Maki 78 of Wakefield died Friday noon while shoveling snow at home from a heart attack. Born February 7 1893 in Vaasan Laani Finland she came to the United States in 1925 settling in Wakefield. Surviving are three daughters Mrs Robert Timm Mrs Arvid Anderson and Mrs Carl Wasmuth one son Dr Wilbur Maki 11 grandchildren and a sister in Stockholm Sweden Funeral services were Monday at Lakeside Memorial Chapel with Rev Toivo Taivalmaa officiating. Burial followed in Lakeside Cemetery.
A basketball game between Bessemer and Wakefield High School Faculties will be at Wakefield High School gym on Thursday Feb 3 starting 8:00 pm. Elementary games begin at 6:15 pm with 5th and 6th graders, then 7th grade. A 50 cent donation at the door will go toward a new football scoreboard for the athletic field.
Tommy Ahonen son of Mr and Mrs Arvi Ahonen celebrated his fifth birthday on January 5 with a home party. Guests included Mr and Mrs Dan Ahonen and daughter Kim Mr and Mrs Leroy Halberg Gary Halberg and Tommy's siblings Jeff Mary Ann Sandra and Kirsti. The guest of honor received many cards and gifts as lunch followed a farm yard themed cake table hosted by Mrs Ahonen.
The First Lutheran Church congregation adopted a 1972 budget totaling 35425 dollars at the annual meeting held January 20. Five thousand dollars are allotted for building repairs, 1500 for Carthage College, and 8400 for benevolence. The meeting noted 835 baptized, 644 confirmed, 191 children, and 325 communicants for 1972. Arnold Perry was ordained in 1971. Michigan Area Suomi Conference met in April. New council members Norman Ahola James Dean Jack Kujala and Jean Nurmi were installed alongside other officers. Avarious reports from treasurer auditor and church committees were presented.
Congressman Philip Ruppe announced fifty-one 11th District youths nominated for U S Service Academies for 1972. Nominations: 20 Air Force, 20 Naval, 18 Military, 9 Merchant Marine. Wakefield's George Corolewski and Kingsford’s Francis Urbanski named among nominees.
Michigan Tech University announces fall quarter honors with 429 students on the Dean's List for a 3.5 GPA or higher and 97 earning straight A averages. Notable Upper Peninsula honorees include Peter J. Bruno a sophomore pre medicine and pre dentistry major, Edward B. Drier a junior forestry major, and Daniel P. Mestnik a freshman pre major.
The Wakefield Parent-Teacher Organization will meet at 7 30 p m Monday February 7 in the high school Music Auditorium. A panel discussion on Facilities and Consolidation will be featured. The public is invited and lunch will be served.
