The 26th annual Han and Bean Feed sponsored by the Men's Brotherhood will be held on February 18 at First Lutheran Church. Tickets are available from Brotherhood members with adults priced at $1.50 per plate.
The Wakefield Cards prepare for a game against Ashland on Friday February 2 as part of a local schedule. Players to watch include key scorers from Wakefield and Ashland as both teams seek a conference win.
Mr and Mrs Michael Celello returned Sunday from a three week journey through Castle Rock Colorado Grants New Mexico Bloomington California and Seattle visiting relatives and friends. They met their grandson Joseph and toured Disneyland Marine Land of the Pacific and other sights noting abundant snow along the way.
Army private John M. Vidako vich, 20, son of Mr and Mrs Nick Vidakovich of 909 Charles Wakefield, fired expert with the M 14 rifle near completing basic training at Ft Campbell Ky in January. The expert rating is the highest mark on the weapons qualification test.
Harold Meese dean of students releases fall quarter MTU honors listing Judith E Mestnik daughter of Mr and Mrs Dan Mestnik Wakefield appears on the Dean's List. NMU student John Bruno visits home during mid term break with Oreste Bruno and other relatives and friends.
Miss Paulette Darlene Wertanen wed David Vernon Post at First Lutheran Church Wakefield with Rev Wayne Kuusisto officiating. The bride wore a bonded crepe sheath with spagheti straps, bow accents, and a silk veil. groom's party included Miss Linda Sue Wacker and Robert Avery as best man. A reception followed as the couple prepared to reside in Ann Arbor Michigan.
Forest Supervisor Michael Kageorge announced that the Ojibway Job Corps Center near Marenisco will remain open despite closures of sixteen centers nationwide. Some staff and corpsmen from affected centers may transfer to Ojibway, with no further closures anticipated. The closures were an economy move by the Office of Economic Opportunity in cooperation with government agencies and private contractors.
Tommy Ahonen celebrated his first birthday with a family party at home on Saturday. A birthday lunch followed on Sunday with aunts uncles grandparents and friends in attendance. Also listed are draft report orders for February 5 at Ironwood Michigan and several names for induction and physical examinations. Mr and Mrs Gust Niemi plan a two month visit to Altadina California with Ed OBrien and family.
The Wakefield Planning Commission met January 18 to elect officers: Eugene Maki chairman, Charles Valesano vice chairman, Ray Norkoli secretary, Martha Jueppert executive secretary. A bylaw revision was approved and attendance rules discussed.
Joyce Cormier daughter of Mr and Mrs James Cormier celebrated her 10th birthday Sunday January 28 with a 2 to 4 pm party at home. Guests enjoyed games prizes and lunch from a red white decor table with a birthday cake. Favors were given and gifts received. Attending were Sally Stemiphar Maria Ahola Lynette Moyle Diane Cossetto Marsha and Marla Delich Kathy Grasso Jane Skolasinski and Jane Radowski. Hostess was Mrs James Cormier assisted by Mrs Einer Hyppa.
Lane and Lane announce the marriage of Anita Louise Lane to Michael John Brass on October 27, 1967 in Pensacola Florida. En3 Brass, USN, is stationed aboard the USS Tidewater AD 31 home port Norfolk Virginia, and Mrs Brass will join him in Norfolk in late February.
About 40 members attended the annual meeting at First Lutheran Church on Thursday January 18. Carl Kleimola and Ben Hulme were reelected to the Church Council for three years, with Forrest Pikka and Leslie Wuorinen elected for new three year terms. The proposed $39,621 budget for 1968 was adopted, up $2,780 from the prior year, with the pastor’s salary raised by $480. A silent prayer honored those who died in 1967. Reports show receipts of $29,484.74 for operating and debt funds, with per member giving of $51.45. Thomas Makinen involved in Vietnam update. council officers elected Eugene Maki vice-president Lauri O. Maki secretary Arvid Nurmi treasurer Ben Hulme assistant secretary Lila Hill financial secretary. Installations occurred Sunday Jan 21.
A ceremony at Michigan Technological University awarded 19 draftsmen and 24 diesel mechanics in special classes. Gerald J. Caspary coordinated the event held Friday January 26 with Prof Carmen Dalli Quadri as speaker and a student from each class delivering remarks. James E. Budck from Wakefield, a diesel graduate, was named a graduate speaker.
