WPA Schedule Opens Next Tuesday Night

WPA Recreational league games begin next Tuesday at the Community building gym. Two games per night on a three-night weekly schedule involve Ramsay vs Conocos and Collegians vs Merchants, with additional matchups on Wednesday and Thursday. Six teams compete under high school rules, junior games held after school.

Stores Stay Open Late and City Holiday Observed

The city stores will remain open until nine each night for the balance of the week to serve last minute shoppers. A two day holiday is set for Sunday and Monday with no post office deliveries on Monday. Methodist Church No. 1 hosts a Christmas service at 9:30 a.m. themed The Invaluable Gift, plus a choir medley of Christmas hymns. Church school meets at 10:30 a.m. under J. S. Gilbert. No Epworth Leagues this Sunday. a Watch Night service and party are planned for the next Sunday.

City Commission approves snow contract and budgets advice

The city commission, in a brief meeting, learns the state will cover 60.6 percent of snow removal costs on US 2 and M 28 starting Jan 1 and defers action on a $20,000 debt request until an attorney general opinion is obtained. They plan an archival indexing project for records back to 1890 and consider expanding staff. Unemployment is not deemed an emergency and a Lansing visit to discuss WPA issues is paused pending guidance.

The Chamber of Commerce offers holiday yard and window decorating prizes. Citizens register with Miss Viola Hanson. many displays already lit. A public meeting at Temperance Hall elected a nine member relief committee led by Alfred Laakso to solicit funds for Finns in Europe. Members include Victor Lepisto treasurer Amanda Carroll secretary and volunteers across city districts. Donations of warm clothing to Amanda Carroll are requested.
