Major General Moran warns 23 000 eligible Michigan veterans have yet to apply for the Korean bonus. Total payments exceed 56 million to 204 170 recipients with 3 948 claims rejected and 1 646 pending. Only one officer and 14 civilians remain to process claims as a monthly rate of 35 to 50. about 70 more expected before the March 6 deadline.
Last rites were held Tuesday morning at St Ambrose church Ironwood for Judge Thomas J Landers 59 who died Saturday evening at Divine Infant hospital after long hospital stays due to heart illness Born in Ironwood August 8 1897 Landers studied law at Marquette and the University of Detroit earning admission to the Michigan bar in 1922 He served as assistant prosecuting attorney and county official before being elected judge of the 32nd district and he was re elected in 1941 1947 and 1953 He is survived by his wife Florence Boyle a son Thomas and a half brother Jeremiah Murphy with a brother John Landers having died earlier this year
John Radowski 53 a native of Wakefield died Sunday evening in South Chicago after years of poor health and retirement from Carnegie Steel Co. He is survived by his wife who died Nov 1 this year two sons Ronald in service and David at home his mother Mrs Madeline Radowski brothers Mike Edward Wakefield and Frank South Chicago four sisters Mrs Emil Grasso Mrs Jerome Salo Mrs Eino Ikola and Miss Helen Radowski all of this city The Radowski family attended services held Wednesday morning.
Post nuptial shower honors Mr. and Mrs. Alpo Maki at Temperance Hall on November twenty ninth. Marjorie Perona, now Mrs. Maki, is daughter of Mrs. Reuben Trudgeon of Hancock Street and the bridegroom’s Wakefield roots link to Mr. and Mrs. Victor Maki. The couple wed in Duluth on November seventeenth and will reside in Wakefield. E E Ensign of Ypsilanti announces engagement of daughter Alice Marie to Clyde G. Benson of Alma, wedding planned in December.

Judge John V. Brennan, age 84, will retire January 1 after 31 years as a circuit judge in Wayne County. Former Ironwood school chief and superintendent, Brennan spoke of work as a life heritage beyond salary, noting no future plans and pondering turning idleness to something useful.
The Michigan State Conservation Department reports a sharp decline in buck kills. About 70,000 deer were taken in the Upper and northern Lower Peninsulas during regular and special seasons, with roughly 21,200 bucks in the Upper Peninsula regular season. Southern Lower Peninsula estimates pending, but typically around 2,500. Regular season bucks total around 58,000, an 18 percent drop from last year’s 71,000. About 12,000 deer were taken in the special season, including roughly 10,000 on December 12 and 2,000 on other allowed dates. Poor hunting conditions with heavy snows blamed for the decline. Northern Lower Peninsula bucks numbered about 37,100 in the regular season. Church notices follow.
The Rev. Fr. J. H. C. Allan leads St. Simon's Orthodox Church in Ironwood Minnesota. Saturday services include the senior class from noon to 3 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Confessions Sunday focus on Orthros at 9 a.m. and Divine Liturgy at 10 a.m.
William Harvey, 70, carpenter at the Sunday Cake mine, retired June 1 after a 48 percent year career, one of the longest service records at the property. He began in 1905 06 as a hoisting engineer with Oliver Mining Co on the Mesabi range, then moved to Wakefield and started his 48 percent year tenure. A Wakefield Woman's Club meeting on December 5 featured a Christmas program with a quartet of Mrs. James Davey Miss Margaret Williams Mr. Rodney Hodge and Mr. Clarence Jacobson performing carols and readings. Donations were given to Gogebic County Tuberculosis Association Good Will Farm and Starr Commonwealth for Boys with plans to entertain Girl Scouts and Brownies on December 18.
The Holy Name Society of Immaculate Conception church will sponsor a Sunday Communion breakfast for the Spiritual Bouquet of the Bishop with Edward Skolasinski as chair and a team of committee members. Savino Bonino is asked to confirm attendance. An afternoon Holy Hour at 2 30 pm will be followed by a church parlors meeting, sermon, and lunch. A parishwide Holy Name Society membership drive starts Sunday and runs through mid January. Honored At Shower Mrs James Cudahy received gifts at a pink and blue shower hosted by Mrs William Kuivinen and others with bingo prizes and a buffet luncheon for about 40 guests. Out of town guests attended. Mrs Frances Morrison plans a winter visit to Stockton and to family in Bessemer.
Miss Shirley Stevens and Miss Beverly Golgin formed a new Girl Scout Troop in Thomaston. The first meeting was held Monday night at the Thomaston Athletic clubrooms. Officers elected: Jacqueline Stevens president, Margaret Green vice president, Betty Sjoblom secretary, Ruth Stevenson treasurer, Karen Green reporter. They plan a Christmas program and meet weekly.
The Wakefield Methodist Church announces preacher D C Carpenter will lead Sunday worship at 9 45 with Sunday School at 10 45 December 16 features a choir Cantata at 7 30 Sunday evening December 23 hosts a Sunday School Christmas Program at 7 30 The Daughters of Isabella hold a regular business meeting Monday night at the club rooms.
Comet residents pressed the city council for a sewer solution, urging funding in the 1957 budget amid long-standing delays. They cited health risks from stagnant water, basement damage, and possible epidemics, asking for a revised plan based on a former engineer’s draft and state health approval. The council agreed to further study and consider the project next year, while also amending two hour parking rules and delaying sewer hose purchases pending samples.
W Arthur James was named justice of the peace by the city council after a Monday vote to succeed A L Bracket who resigned effective December 1 He will serve until the 1960 election and the salary was set at 1200 yearly The new justice will be at City Hall Monday Wednesday and Friday mornings and available to police upon request
