Convictions for Game Laws Hit October High in Michigan

Michigan conservation officers report October saw 635 convictions for game law violations, topping the previous October record by 54. Pheasant arrests neared 200 as enforcement expanded under new training and cooperative officer programs.

Tax Talks Move Toward Township Funding

Township officials seek $200 for local skall rinks if the school board matches. A conference will consider school support for the project. WPA talks planned to secure work for uncertified men. Barracks Approved for Wakefield State Police

The WPA offices at Ironwood announce approval of a Wakefield state police barracks. Works manager S. P. Fitzpatrick says the project will cost about 16000 dollars and include a fire proof brick and tile HQ and living space for detachment members. A range of space will be allocated for police activities to strengthen highway law enforcement beyond urban centers.

Buck Gets Place on Michigan Tech Five

Richard Buck a Wakefield high school standout in 1930 and 1931 joins twelve Michigan Tech players for the Houghton tonite five’s first trip of the 1935-36 season. The Engineers beat Superior State Teachers and face Ironwood Junior tonight as Buck, a civil engineering sophomore, competes for a first-string berth.

Affidavit To Be Attached On Chattel Mortgages

County official Frank Van Gorder says the register of deeds must attach affidavits to certain chattel mortgage filings. The affidavit must declare actual and adequate land as consideration and that the mortgage was given in good faith. The Sept. 25 law requires filing all chattel mortgages with the county office.

Federal forestry program to stay, Roosevelt backs six point plan

Washington reports President Roosevelt will urge Congress to adopt a six point forestry and conservation bill to expand national forests for about 15 years. Senator Fletcher of Florida proposes a forest credit bank to refinance debt and support forest administration. New law aims to better coordinate research, utilize forests, aid unemployment relief, and establish forestry as a recognized profession with expanded education.

Fish Lock Installed at Cisco Lake Outlet

Concrete pouring for a fish lock at Cisco Lake outlet is complete. H M Wick says the conservation committee will inspect once in operation. The lock, about nine feet high, sits at a dam long used to raise Cisco lake levels to aid navigation and fish movement. Gogebic County and the Land o Lakes Women’s Civic Club share project costs. The St Mary’s club will hold its ziggity tournament next Tuesday with free lunch.

State highway chief backs livestock ban on roads

Murray D. Van Wagoner, Michigan highway commissioner, proposed extending the 1867 livestock-at-large statute to all state highways. He warned against compulsory fencing, citing farmer costs, and noted safer roads could protect tourists and boost Upper Peninsula tourism. He cited Supreme Court rulings holding owners liable for cattle roaming on public roadways.

Girls to Hold Social Hour by Recreation Club

Longyear recounts early Gogebic iron range days

J M Longyear, famed in Lake Superior mining, recalls early exploration days on the Gogebic range. He traces ore sightings from 1850 surveys through 1873 reports, notes Brotherton’s magnetic surveys, early Colby and Nipigon finds, and initial explorations by Sedgwick and Norrie. He describes routes from Ashland to Ironwood and the Montreal river camps, with the Gogebic story continuing on page four.
