Steps To Organize Local Civil Defense Body

A steering committee led by John Thomas inaugurates a local civil defense and citizenship training council with state and federal backing planned. Attendees include city officials, police, fire, health and education leaders as well as Legion members and the mayor. A meeting in Marquette will outline activities in Michigan.

Boy Scout Drive Nears End in Wakefield

The annual Boy Scout drive is near completion with receipts around $1000. R A Burns, fund chairman, reports $821.65 collected so far. The Connor Lumber and Land Co and its workers lead giving with $331, company matching employee contributions dollar for dollar.

Tax Time at Hand Delinquent city taxes due by March 1

School and county taxes are payable at the city treasurer's office December 1. Delinquent city taxes may be paid at the same time. All unpaid taxes after March 1, 1951 are returned to the county treasurer as delinquent. Up to January 10 a one percent collection fee is charged. After that date a four percent charge is made until March 1.

Aged Wakefield Man Found Dead On Cabin Farm

Coroner C W Moore Jr reports the body was frozen making cause of death hard to determine. The Wakefield man died Saturday night and was dropped by a cab at his cabin 500 feet from the road. Born in Sweden on December 25 1870 he immigrated to the United States in 1891 and later worked in Hurley mines before living on the Gust Johnson farm for four decades.

Paper Ballots Set For City Special Election

The city will use paper ballots for the Monday December 11 special election due to the recount and impounding of ballots and machines. City clerk Monica Kanieski announced machines cannot be used until checks are completed. voters eligible for taxes are asked to approve a $150,000 water development bond with a three fifths majority required.

Gogebic Junior College Offers History Course

Michigan State College in cooperation with Gogebic Junior College offers Europe Since 1870 Beginning This 20th Century with N. J. Rajkovich as instructor. Three quarter credits cost 13 dollars for twelve weeks meeting Thursdays starting January 11, 1951. Credits apply toward undergraduate and graduate levels.

D A R Good Citizen Chosen at Wakefield High School

Evelyn Maki daughter of Mrs Aila Maki has been named the D A R Good Citizen of Wakefield High School by the senior class and faculty. She ranks near the top of her class is active in many groups and will study nursing after graduation. Mrs Clyde Cain from Marquette spent the weekend with her parents Mr and Mrs Garnet Trudgeon.
