Child Dies as Autos Crash at Crossroads
At a Gogebic County crossroads near U S 2 a six year old girl, Kelma Peterson, died from injuries at Grand View after a crash between a county road gravel truck and another vehicle. The mother and a three year old son, and Anna Mattson were injured in separate collisions. Arvo Willing was treated at Wakefield hospital after his vehicle was struck near Tobin's Siding.

Rain Quells Fires Across Gogebie County and Wisconsin
A first rain in a month arrived Wednesday afternoon easing brush and forest fires that surged last week. Gogebie county saw no serious damage as forces contained the blazes. In Wisconsin, fires damaged standing timber around Upson and south of the city, but overall areas burned stayed low.

Harold J. Richards and Axel Hill were elected city commissioners for three year terms in the annu city election Tuesday. Richards received 667 votes and Hill 577, with a total of 1,277 votes cast. William E. Woodward won the year term as constable with 643 votes, over Joseph Chiambretti with 395. Two voting machines were used for the first time, with smooth operation. Results were announced 20 minutes after polls closed. The new commissioners will begin their terms the first Monday in September.

Five Buses Assigned to Transport District Pupils
Five school buses will be used to transport pupils from outlying districts and township junior and senior school buildings. Routes cover Tula nine miles north of the city Jackson Creek Planter Man mine Verona Wico and Plymouth. A sixth bus will be kept for emergencies during the daily operation. Prisoners Sentenced to Ionia Reformatory

Raids in Gogebic County Seize Nine Men Including Leo Patyk
Federal agents led raids Tuesday evening in Gogebic County arresting nine men including Leo Patyk who ran billiard rooms in the Kerkes block basement. Patyk was taken to Marquette for arraignment and released on 2500 dollars bail while others faced warrants at Bessemer and Ironwood. Gogebic County Tax Valuation Reduced for 1929
Gogebic County will set its valuation for tax purposes at 62,875,000 a drop of 2,425,000 from last year. J B Patrick reported at the Lansing equalization meeting and to the county board in Tuesday’s session. He said the state tax commission’s tentative figures were out of proportion with other peninsula counties. Last year’s valuation stood at 63,375,000. Patrick also noted that 1929 state tax receipts for Gogebic were 224,917.44 while state funds returned to the county through the primary and Turner school funds totaled 218,332.98.
