Council Deliberates Mon Day Meeting on Veterans Monument and Fencing

Greene Grigmore and Peterson Granite Co. advised against adding inscriptions to the Wakefield cemetery World War I veteran monument saying a bronze marker would clash with the memorial. Council set bids aside, will reexamine. Other actions included settling Joe Tarro fence dispute, installing parking meters, repairing the Plymouth water reservoir, and considering social security for city workers.

Teacher Mary Katherine Smith Assigned to Negaunee Third Grade

Miss Mary Katherine Smith, four years a Wakefield teacher, will teach the third grade at Central Grade school in Negaunee. A native of Ewen, she is a graduate of Northern Michigan College, Marquette.

Taconite Film Shows Mesaba Range Program

Rotary club meeting featured a 40 minute color film detailing the Mesaba range taconite project. R D Hodge chaired and explained the mining, crushing, washing, and roasting steps leading to pellet size ore for shipment and furnace use. Next week the club will tour Washington DC with refreshments from WSCS Methodist church.

Polio Cases Rise in Upper Peninsula

Four new polio cases were admitted at St. Luke's hospital in Marquette. Four fatalities have occurred in the UP this year. Last year by this date there were 16 cases and one death. Counties reporting cases include Alger nine, Iron and Marquette eight each, Chippewa three, Delta two, Houghton two, Baraga, Dickinson, Ontonagon, Schoolcraft, and Mackinac one each, with Gogebic reporting none.

Death of Tom Drazenovich at Grand View Hospital

Tom Drazenovich 9 of Chaney Lake Road died at Grand View Hospital at 9 15 Saturday. Born March 27 1897 in Austria he worked for Castile Mining Co. Surviving sister Mary Bicanic Mrs Mary Anderson Houghton Yugoslavia visited her son in law and daughter Funeral rites were held Tuesday at St Marys Church Ramsay with Rev Louis Cappo officiating Burial in Lakeside Cemetery.

Cement shortages halt Wakefield public works including sidewalk paving on the US-2 contract east of Wakefield. Ready mix concrete has been unavailable for several weeks and may extend into late September, with minor job sacks obtainable from some sources.

Former Pastor to Teach In Munising High School

Former Wakefield pastor Herbert Ingraham will teach French and English at Munising High School next year after leaving Wakefield three years ago to serve as chaplain and teacher for the Columbus Boys' Choir in New Jersey. He will keep Detroit Conference church membership and has preached as guest in Marquette this summer.

Six Wakefield students win nursing scholarships at Reese Hospital

Miss Barbara Ann Sachs, June graduate of Wakefield schools, receives a scholarship from the Woman's Board to enter Michael Reese Hospital School of Nursing in Chicago. Five other girls share the award, covering tuition for the three year program chosen for outstanding achievement at the Midwest’s largest private hospital.

Parking Meters to Be Installed for Sept Service

The Wakefield city council approved a parking meter ordinance at a special meeting, setting a $1 fine for violations and approving 139 meters for Sunday Lake Street and nearby blocks. The meters, removable for winter snow removal, require payment at the Violations Bureau. Installation is slated for the first week in September.

Resume of Band Classes Begins Next Monday

Carl E. Nelson announces the resumption of instrumental music classes starting next Monday and continuing to Sept 2.
