Discussion warns that socialist governance harms liberty and agriculture, citing England under Labour and U S concerns. Michigan topics cover Hoover Commission reforms, state finances, labor shortages, public works bonds, and education funding amid postwar inflation and Korea era costs.
Clifford G Bridges an Escanaba contractor and deputy sheriff candidate faces $2100 bonds on charges of resisting an officer and carrying a concealed weapon. Mrs Jean Peterson Iron River and Mr and Mrs Lawrence Hupy Spaulding await hearings after a Saturday incident at Bingo s tavern that led to a scuffle with Trooper Richard Terpstra. Bond set at 500 for Peterson 500 for Bridges 100 for unlicensed pistol and 3500 for the Hupys. Preliminary hearing adjourned to August 28 in Ironwood municipal court.
New equipment for the continuation of the water exploration job is expected to be moved in this week. The work aims to be completed before October 1, as advised to City Manager Don Brown.
Randa, a longtime Democratic activist and Ironwood native, seeks another term as county clerk. He faces challenger Louis Obradovich, who was defeated by Randa in the previous primary. The current staff includes deputy Rudolph Egizi, Mary Hayes, and Margaret LaChapelle.
Marilyn Gustafson, a Wakefield high school freshman, placed third in the junior division of the Upper Peninsula baton twirling contest held Friday in Negaunee with a score of 83. Kristine Phillips and Joan Messier, both of Negaunee, led juniors with 88 and 85. In the senior division Lena Deacon of Franklin, N J, won with 89 percent, Gloria Maki 88, and Sharilyn Murray of Ishpeming 85. The contest judge was Mrs D M, a national baton twirling champion. Marilyn’s parents, Harold and (unreadable) Gustafson, witnessed the event.
The local Legion club faces a hearing on August 30 at Iron Mountain over gambling devices on the premises after a recent inspector visit. Louis D. Adams of Bessemer is cited for selling spirits not authorized for sale. his hearing is set for the same day.
Eighteen senior mining engineering students under Prof. E. P. Pfleicher will begin a field trip September 12 covering about 3000 miles. They will inspect underground operations and surface plants in the Marquette ranges and visit iron ore mines at Wakefield.
The board approved a $50,000 borrowing authorization to cover payrolls and other expenditures until January 1951 tax collections. State funds added about $50,000, including a $6,635.04 sales tax diversion and $42,250 from the State aid fund. Wayne Foster, 1949 St Thomas University graduate and Randolph resident, was elected junior high mathematics English teacher completing the teaching roster. Schools open Sept 6 with staff attending two days of preterm meetings.
Fifty young men have been called for physical examinations for induction into the armed forces. Fourteen report at Escanaba on September 21. From Wakefield, William Bertie, Thomas Sporoich, Clyde Randall, John Hanges, Gerald Hallberg, George Geroux, Lloyd Vertanen, Stanley Radowski, William Gustafson, Eli Miljevich, Jack Laird, John a Joe Sailer, and Douglas Maki must report August 23 at Bessemer for transport to Escanaba. In September, 14,234 Michigan men will be examined to meet the October draft call of 2,850. The total to go to Escanaba is 650 from the upper peninsula.
Carl E. Nelson, band director, announced that the seventh grade band will meet for rehearsal at 9 30 a m on Monday while the high school band will resume at 1 p m the same day. Mr and Mrs Nelson and their son have been vacationing near Proctor Minnesota.
Eight years as deputy sheriff and traffic officer prepare George Georgie for sheriff duties. Named traffic officer by the board of supervisors, he has handled diverse cases in the department. Married with four children, he lives at the Anvil location after attending Bessemer township schools and working in mines. Unopposed for the Republican sheriff nomination in the September 12 primary.
James Mezzano Jr. among 90 Michigan high school instructors registering in Detroit for a five day Driver-Training Institute. Sponsored by the State Department of Public Instruction University of Michigan Extension Division and Auto Club of Michigan, the course aims to prepare educators to teach driver education in high schools. Scholarships cover all expenses.
Dr. Charles P. Drury reports two four year old girls in Lakewood and Cherry Creek with mild paralysis as the only polio cases in the Upper Peninsula at present. Both are at St. Luke's Hospital or home confinement with earlier Ontonagon county cases now recovered. The year remains unusually Polio light for the UP and state overall versus 1949.
Approximately 100 will attend the ninth annual retreat near Watersmeet as Camp Plagens hosts the weekend gathering. Six men from Wakefield and Ramsay parishes have registered in advance. others from previous years are expected to join for the spiritual recollection. Joseph W. Gill of Wakefield serves as retreat association treasurer.
Representative Louis Mezzano of Gogebic and Ontonagon counties attends a Lansing special session to confer with legislators on a proposal to appropriate funds next year for research and development of low grade iron ores in the upper peninsula.
Lake Superior Iron Ore association reports a 25.35 percent drop in shipments from August 1 versus last year with 34,286,794 tons moved and 45,932,033 tons a year ago. Ashland docks handled 910,109 tons in July, 651,570 last July, and by August 1 total Ashland shipments were 3,243,071 tons versus 3,841,776 last year. Ore moves from the range to Escanaba docks using diesel equipment and Mesaba range cars. Sunday Lake has shipped 315,174 tons this year with 158,563 tons remaining under contract for season completion. The Plymouth mine shows little tonnage while day and night crews push rock and dirt to enable a 350,000 ton season target.
Wakefield Sports Club softball, lacking its usual form, was defeated 7-5 by Rigoni Inn of Ironwood in District Tournament play at Ironwood Wednesday evening. Rigoni led 3-0 early, Wakefield answered with one in the third, but Ironwood added two more in the fourth and a five-hit rally in the sixth produced three runs. Bucko Sawaski hit a seventh inning homer for Wakefield. Nick Vidakovich contributed a double and single. D. Kalla led Rigonis with two doubles.
Rudolph Ulrich retires after 49 years with the Connell Landing Lumber Company ending a career as oiler and millwright. A farewell party at the Ringsmuth home honored his move to Mosinee where the Ulrich family will reside. He came to Wakefield eight years ago and earlier worked in Ironwood and Saxon before helping build the Connerville mill.
The city council meets Monday afternoon in the council chambers to hear first reports on the street resurfacing program and approve routine matters. During the week the county road commission began resurfacing several roads including Pike location and Castile. City crews prep Comet mine road for a new surface.
