Bennett Acts To Help Iron Ore Interests

Congressman John B. Bennett of Ontonagon pushes a bill to develop low grade taconite ores in Michigan's Twelfth district. He seeks 50 year RFC loans for production, citing 800 million tons of iron concentrates and wartime demand, while hoping to return home before the Sept. 12 primary and facing GOP challenger Louis A. Keary.

Kenneth Youngs Named Supervisor for Connor Pilot Plant

Kenneth Youngs, Chicago mechanical engineer, is named supervisor in charge of the experimental plant being installed in the enclosed ice rink. The Elemendorf Co. will supply an engineer during installation. A new ceiling and several pieces of equipment are on site. The Lilburn Smith Machine Shop heavy press is nearly finished and South Carolina equipment shipped June 16 should arrive in ten days. First experimental work should start late this month.

Missing In Korea Soldier Named Florence Laessig’s Son

Missing in Korea since July 12, the son of Mrs Florence Laessig has been reported by the war department. He served in the 35th Infantry since August 13, 1948.

Methodist Youth Caravan Plans Week in Wakefield

A Methodist Youth Caravan arrives in Wakefield Saturday to meet the local youth fellowship and other groups. The four caravaners Bill Miles Barbara Allen Anne Walker Kathryn Salley and counselor Irene Alexander will lead daily meetings through Friday with worship recreation and discussion for ages 12 to 23. They will also address the Wakefield Rotary Club Monday evening and plan eight weeks of service in Pennsylvania and Michigan after Iron Mountain.

Change in Schedule for Chicago Ironwood Train

A new schedule takes effect Sunday August 6 delaying the morning Chicago to Ironwood run with an 8 50 arrival and 9 05 departure while Chicago departure remains 6 00 pm. Delays stem from Flambeau 400 mail and express loads and the afternoon Chicago service was cut back beyond Antigo Wisconsin. Also notes Miss Helen Laakso visiting family in Pike location and Wakefield Council meeting Monday with routine matters on docket.

Hill Family Receives News From Tokyo Hospital

Lt William Hill is reported in a Tokyo hospital with Mrs Hill stating all is well. The Hills reside in Bessemer with two children and have been in Japan since Lt Hill was assigned there. He may have been wounded in Korea while with the 34th Infantry. Pfc Peter Hill, another son, serves in the army air force in the Asiatic area.

City Ends Year With Cash Deficit From Unbudgeted Water Project

The monthly financial report shows a 10 635 40 deficit in city funds at year end due to unbudgeted water exploration payments of 30 850 14 snow removal overrun of 1351 and road grader purchase of 1682. Bonds will supply revenue for the water project returning the total to the general fund leaving an approximate 20 000 cash balance.

Big League Scouts To Observe Local Baseball Tryouts

Four scouts from the St. Louis Cardinals Detroit Tigers Chicago White Sox and Cubs will attend games August 10 11 and 12 at Bessemer to observe local teams from Bessemer Wakefield Ramsay Mercer Ontonagon and Trout Creek and to conduct try outs for possible berths on major league clubs. An accompanying attorney moters of the senator program announced this week. The American Legion teams are expected to hold playoff games during the three day event.

Wakefield Schools Open September 6 1950

The Wakefield Schools announce the new year begins at regular hours on Wednesday September 6 1950 for pupils. Faculty start Tuesday September 5 to prepare. A thorough maintenance program has been carried out since June 2. Details on assignments and bus schedules will be released before opening. Rotary club hears Scout reports from Sven Ekstrom and John Ekstrom with Jimmie Butler following the Valley Forge Jamboree where over 47 000 Scouts attended.

Governor Candidate Visits Wakefield on Stop Sign Safety Push

Wakefield hosted a Republican candidate for governor from Brighton. City Police Chief Matt Hill announced a joint effort with the Michigan State Highway Department and the State Safety Commission to reduce stop sign violations. State Highway Commissioner Charles M. Ziegler stressed the danger of rising traffic on Michigan’s 107,000 miles of highways. Hill cited thousands of serious accidents last year caused by failed stop sign obedience and urged drivers to stop fully look both ways and wait for a safe gap.

Gogebic County Fair Opens August 10

The Gogebic county fair runs Thursday August 10 through Sunday August 13 with entry day on Thursday. Nine communities are featured on three special days and a 4 H parade is planned for Saturday along with harness racing featuring 63 horses across six classes.

Plymouth Mine Begins Ore Shipments in July

The Plymouth mine started ore shipments on July 24 and by month end had delivered 22 000 tons to furnaces. The season’s planned shipments total 350 000 tons. In July more than 140 000 tons of rock were moved in the pit to uncover ore for this year.

Holton Michigan school head named Wakefield teacher

Glenn Wooster, longtime Wakefield schools teacher of 11 years, is chosen to lead Holton Michigan schools. He studied at Iron Mountain Northern State Teachers College Western State Teachers College and Wayne University, before serving as principal at Big Beaver Birmingham. His wife Sylvia Tusa will teach in Holton. They have five children.
