12th District Meet Held In Wakefield

About 125 Legionnaires Auxiliary members wives and guests gathered at the American Legion clubrooms in Wakefield for the Twelfth District meet ing. F. William Goodreau Crystal Falls presided with district officers present as plans for the forthcoming Legion Convention were discussed. The district consists of Keweenaw Houghton Ontonagon Gogebic Iron Dickinson Marquette and Baraga counties with 36 posts and 4985 members.

Dennis Forney Inducted at Rotary Club Meeting

Dennis Forney son of Mr and Mrs Robert Forney was inducted at Uthrotar during the Rotary Club meeting Monday. August Tiberi served as installing officer and Eugene Maki chaired the program discussing the Railroad Settlement and President Johnsons intervention. John Werham Ironwood Rotarian attended as a visitor.

Thomaston Man 66 Dies After Long Illness

Leon E. Scott of Route 1 Thomaston died Sunday at 3 05 p m at Divine Infant Hospital where he had been a patient since April 20 He was born September 12 1897 in Defiance Ohio and served in World War I He worked for Connor Lumber and Land Co until retirement He was not married Surviving are sisters Pauline Green Hamilton Indiana and Billie Smith Weston Funeral held Lakeside Memorial Chapel Wednesday at 2 00 p m with Rev James Ritchie officiating Interment Lakeside Cemetery.

Woman's Club Pot Luck Dinner Set for April 6 in Wakefield

The Wakefield Woman's Club will hold its annual pot luck dinner Wednesday April 6 at 6 00 pm. Lunch committee led by Mrs James Davey and Mrs Bernard Olejniczak includes Mrs Cosmo Bonello Mrs Robert Lawrie and Mrs Arnold Swanson. Mrs J R Franck chairs the program with a Youth activity section featuring the 4H Sunshine Club which placed second in a talent show. Election of officers will occur during the business portion.

City meters intended to fund parks are drained by nickels dimes and even slugs from washers and mirrors. Citizens should feel disgrace at stealing funds meant for playgrounds and park improvements.

Church Board and Naami Circle Meet This Week

Town notes list a Methodist Church board gathering on Monday May 4 at 7 30 pm and the Naami Circle meeting at Mrs Bertha Campbell’s home on Tuesday May 5 at 2 pm Mrs James Gilbert will lead the lesson Also several residents are visiting relatives and attending events including university staff nurses and local prom attendees with several trips to Marquette Sullivan Missouri and Houghton Lake.

Funeral services announced for John E. Pikka

John E. Pikka, 67, of Castile Road, died unexpectedly at home. He was born in Kyro Finland on July 20 1896 and came to the United States at age nine. He married Aili Pysto in August 1916 and worked in local mines for 49 years, retiring three years ago. Surviving are his wife, two sons Ronald and Carl, two daughters Arvo Alvila and Harold Berga, 14 grandchildren and two great grandchildren, along with siblings and relatives. Funeral services will be held Friday at 2:00 p.m. at Lakeside Memorial Chapel with Rev Rudolph Kemppainen officiating. Burial will be at Lakeside Cemetery.

Indianhead 4-H Club Meeting Plans and Awards

The Indianhead 4-H Club met at Melita Juoppers home on April 23 at 7 p.m. They decided to continue with summer 4-H and to have leaders gather project information for the next meeting. Girls received Achievement Day awards with ribbons to be added to the Memory Book. Visitors Mrs. Jack Ballone and Diane Salmela attended. Ballone gave an informative talk on hair grooming and styling tips. The next meeting will be May 7 at Jean Hendrickson's home.

Word arrives that Fred Brandt a Wakefield senior citizen died in New Mexico just before his planned return from a winter vacation. The remains will be brought back to Wakefield for burial.

The Lutheran Church Women of Immanuel Lutheran in Wakefield hosted guest Joseph Bria who outlined Gogebic County Juvenile Court duties and foster home needs. He discussed case review processes, teenager problems, and criteria for foster placement.

Nels Kuivinen to Retire After 30 Years of Service

Nels Kuivinen plans retirement May 1 after over thirty years delivering Standard Oil in Wakefield. He and his wife will tour California to meet their grandson, fish and hunt, and circle Lake Superior. Arvi Ahonen will succeed him as distributor. The notice also lists students earning B or better in grades 1 through 12 for the fifth marking period.

Changes Made At Local Postoffice

Local postoffice adjustments ordered in Washington by Postmaster General Gronouski take effect May 4 in Wakefield and other cities. Lobby hours are weekdays 8 15 to 4 45 p m and window service 8 30 to 4 30 p m with Saturday 8 30 to noon. Sundays holidays 10 to noon. Money orders on rural and star routes end each Saturday starting May 5.

Wakefield Library Participates in Michigan State Survey

The Wakefield Public Library was among 271 Michigan libraries in the first state wide survey of public library use. The survey week of Feb 10 shows over a million weekly users, 10 million volumes borrowed, and many engage in reference and special services. Local results note 158 women and 98 men among patrons and detail varying use by age and purpose.

Daughters of Isabella to Meet on May 5

The Daughters of Isabella will hold their regular meeting on Tuesday May 5 at 8 00 p m in the Knights of Columbus clubrooms.
