Opening Day Fishing Season Set as State Agencies Issue Licenses

More than 320 fishing licenses and about 110 trout special stamps were sold by three local agencies Kingsmuth's Hardware Gamble Store and the Wakefield Pharmacy preparatory to the April 30 opening of the 1955 fishing season. Most trout will be planted in streams in the Upper Peninsula with 350000 to 400000 fish released before opening day. The bass season starts June 18 and several fishing bills are pending in the Legislature. The Marenisco School District annual election will be June 13 with one board seat up for a 3 year term.

Art Class Ends With Fine Exhibit At Community Building

The Woman's Club art class wrapped its year with an exhibit at the Community building showcasing pencil sketches watercolors block prints oil paintings glazed copper jewelry and ash tray works. Instructor Mrs Howard Anderson praised the talent and noted most members attended weekly sessions since last fall and hopes for a fall continuation inviting more women to join.

Chamber Meets at Wagner's Cafe May 4

The Commerce Club or Chamber of Commerce holds its regular meeting at Wagner's Cafe on Putnam Street Wednesday evening May 4 with dinner at 6 30. After a brief business session Bergland mill owner from the White River Timber Co will speak on logging. Mrs Leila Korpi has returned from Detroit after several months away.

Beaver Take Hits New High For Recent Years

The four-county trapping season closed April 20 with over 5,000 beaver trapped and sealed. Wakefield led with 756 beaver and 22 otter pelts, Ewen sealed 829 beaver and 10 otter hides, and Waters meet 330 beaver and 12 otter hides. Total 1955 season was highest in years. prices ranged from 2 to 23 dollars per pelt. Few buyers were at the sealings, four first day and one last day.

Lt Col Cavender to participate in LOGEX 55 at Fort Lee

Lt Col Cavender son of Mr and Mrs Arthur Cavender will take part in LOGEX-55 at Fort Lee Virginia on May 27. He serves as an umpire for the Army wide logistical exercise training 5000 officers and enlisted personnel in supply defense for modern warfare. Cavender is a Brooke Army Medical Center Medical Field Service School member, entered service July 1940, Notre Dame 1935 graduate and St Louis University Medical 1939 graduate, Phi Chi member.

HS Band Heads to Munising for Concert Tour

The 64 member Wakefield high school band left at 6 this morning for a 200 mile bus trip to Munising to start a home and home concert series with the Munising school band. They will perform this afternoon and stay with local families. After a sight seeing trip Saturday they return to Wakefield late afternoon. George Harvey and Oscar Benson drove the band members and chaperones were H B Sutter Mrs Oscar Benson and Eugene Maki. C E Nelsons car carried some instruments.

Special Date For College Qualification Test

The Director of Selective Service schedules a special College Qualification Test for May 9 1955 for registrants unable to take the Dec 9 1954 or Apr 21 1955 exams. To apply for the May 19 1955 test, registrants need not have applied earlier. Postmark by May 9 1955. Eligible registrants must be in full time college study and intend occupational deferment as a student. Apply at Local Board 28 or at their college for forms.

Valesanos Celebrate Silver Anniversary in Wakefield

Mr and Mrs Anton Valesano marked 25 years of marriage with a Sunday Lake Gun Club party hosted by relatives from Ironwood and Wakefield. The couple, wed April 23 1930 in Ironwood, have two sons Eugene and Rudolph and a daughter Virginia Cicero. Entertainment included accordion music by Peggy Valesano and dancing.

Rites Held Tuesday For Mrs Oscar Niemi

Funeral rites were held Tuesday afternoon at Lakeside Memorial chapel for Mrs. Oscar Niemi 13 who died Saturday night at Divine Infant of Prague hospital. Rev S V Autere pastor of First Lutheran church officiated. Pallbearers were Eli Keto John Koiyn Arvo Liuha Charles Lippola Phillip Mattila and Gust Koski. Born in Finland July 19 1881 she married there in 1901. The family moved to Wakefield in 1921 and remained residents. Survived by husband two sons William and Paul and daughter Mrs Isaac Raisanen with five grandchildren and three sisters and a brother in Finland.

Local couple attend spring bank meeting and travel notes

Mr. and Mrs. A. L. Stannard returned from Minneapolis where he represented their local institution at the spring meeting of banks in the ninth federal reserve district. Others report trips to Minneapolis Detroit Columbus Ohio Wakefield and Chicago with military and family plans including a Navy recruit leave and a wedding in Waukegan Illinois.

Style Show and Dancing Planned by Wakefield Club

A Wakefield Woman's club meeting Wednesday features a style show by Sydella's Apparel Shop with pupil models on toe and a Barbara School of Dancing display. The program begins with a 7 pm board meeting and an 8 pm general session in the Community Building ballroom.

Relich to Ship Loomis Stockpile 100000 Tons Ore Contract

The Peter Relich Company has been awarded the contract by PM Co to ship 100000 tons of ore from the Loomis pit stockpile this season. Loadabout 5000 tons weekly from stockpile re Se cars while daily production continues at the Sunday Lake mine. No winter loading orders have been received. First Lady Honors Mrs. Rummel on 91st Birthday in Letter

Mamie Eisenhower sends a warm White House note to Mrs. J. J. Rummel of Wakefield Wisconsin on her ninety first birthday April 28. The Rummels have lived on Sunday Lake Street since moving from their farm near Helensville Jefferson County. Mrs. Rummel, born April 27 1864, remains in fair health, doing her own housework and errands despite past hospitalization for a respiratory illness.

Maki Among 123 New Members in Agriculture Honor Society

Wilbur Maki, a graduate student and son of Mr and Mrs John E Maki, is among 123 new members of Gamma Sigma Delta the agriculture honor society at Iowa State College. A banquet and initiation were held April 25 for 49 undergraduates 56 graduates 13 faculty and 5 alumni selected for membership. Undergraduate members are drawn from the top quarter of the senior class scholastically with eligibility extended to outstanding graduate students alumni and faculty.

Xingu Cast Takes Road Tour For Out of Town Debut

The Xingu group departs Tuesday for its first out of town appearance at the Ironwood Woman's Club. The all star local club cast presents a spring comedy after recent club and Rotary gatherings and plans a PTA appearance on May 18.

Polio Vaccination Begins With No Reactions Reported

No local reactions were reported after the first inoculation for polio preventive given to 200 first and second grade students on May 20. The local health staff noted the smooth administration and urged continued precautions.
