Voters will decide whether to raise Wakefield city tax limit from 15 to 18 mills. The pamphlet outlines past income, uses, and the impact on households with a $1000 valuation, noting school and county taxes aside. It argues that balanced budget steps could avoid higher rates, or that higher taxes may be needed as property values rise.
Andrew Asikainen former Iron Mountain Republican leader accuses Marquette prison warden Simon R. Anderson of not firing Democrats in three weeks and calls for change. He seeks Jenkins public exposure and petitions to governor, while offering endorsements for cash from U P Republican club candidates. Anderson says Asikainen sought a Democrat job and warns no replacement will occur.
The annual senior class play will be staged at the Community building theater next Tuesday night under Miss Audrey Yoder. The farce Guess Again promises broad comedy with a strong cast. Curtain rises at 8 15 with music by the high school orchestra directed by Carl Nelson.
The city board of review will convene at the city clerk's office May 6 and continue for three days and as many days as needed from 1 p m to 9 p m. Members include City Clerk Chester Rydeski City Engineer Joseph Rowell Commissioner Dr A W Colberg Alois Kerkes and Axel Hill.
A Sons of the Legion drum and bugle corps meeting drew 30 members at the Community building Legion room. A reorganization meeting is set for next Monday evening April 29 with a committee to draft new rules and officers to be elected. Chester Rydeski, former Wakefield municipal band director, is named new corps director.
Mr and Mrs George Rydeski are the parents of a daughter born at the Wakefield hospital last Sunday morning. The infant weighed six pounds and twelve and one fourth ounces.
Plans for the eighth annual DeMolay Conclave were discussed at a Wakefield chapter meeting. The event, May 24 to 26, will be held at the new Masonic Temple in Marquette and will unite DeMolay chapters from across the Upper Peninsula. The program includes a state deputy reception a state degree team confer initiatory degree a banquet and a dance. The chapter also plans a public service and at least two initiations in the near term.
Odd Fellows and Rebekahs observed the 121st birthday of Odd Fellowship with a banquet program and dance at the Community Building. The program included music readings and speeches, with Dr. C. F. Whiteshield of Trout Creek and O. B. Schroeder of Ashland as speakers. William O. Trezise of Ironwood could not attend. Attendees came from Bergland Ontonagon Hurley Ashland and range communities.
Jack Hongisto 59 died Thursday at 3 45 pm at his brother and sister in law’s farm home east of Wakefield after years of asthma. Born January 22 1881 in Finland he was unmarried and survived by a brother two sisters and other relatives in the United States and Finland. Funeral services Tuesday at 2 pm from the Finnish Evangelical Lutheran church with Rev. F W Kaskeen officiating.
Miss Ida Amirangioli, a Chicago hospital nurse, spends several days in the city visiting friends and relatives. Mrs. Rice, staying with Mr. and Mrs. Anton Bracket, heads home to Sagola this Sunday. Verna Sawaski, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Louis Sawaski, spent the weekend in town and returned to Ashland work. Sixteen Catholic Youth Organization members hiked twelve miles to Bessemer and back, enjoying the outing and meals.

Wakefield DeMolay Chapter solicits orders for pasties during the week of April 27 to meet charter expenses. Grand Council granted the charter at a special meeting last Thursday, a honor signaling high standards. Committee led by Waldo Johnson plans city canvassing April 27 to May 3 with deliveries around noon May 4.
The 120 member high school chorus under Miss Vera Babka will perform at the annual music festival in Ashland at Northland College auditorium on Sunday May 12. School buses will transport students with faculty chaperones. This marks the second year local schools have been invited to participate.
Openers face variable conditions as lingering winter weather warps forecasts for opening day. South streams and early runoff affect fishing, while most anglers rely on the 1 general rod license for all species. Creel limits total 15 trout, minimum seven inches, season runs to Labor Day.
A meeting of the Auxiliary to Geroux post No. 11 American Legion was held in the Community building. They voted to buy 1,250 poppies to be sold by members on Saturday May 25. Proceeds fund rehabilitation and child welfare work. They also donated 2 to the American Society for the Control of Cancer aiding its enlistment drive.
The Wakefield Rotary Club will hold a stag party Monday night at 5:45 at the Wico clubhouse. I L Voyer and C J Haskins are co chairmen in charge. Cribbage tournament playoffs will be played with prizes for winners and losers and a buffet lunch served.
The city commission, in a 16 minute meeting, approved May 1 to May 15 as clean-up week with a free load of garbage for each household and extra loads at standard rates. Building permits were granted for remodeling and repairs costing $150 to $500. The city will operate the gravel pit with WPA labor under city oversight. Mayor Wilson plans a proclamation and notes WPA layoff protests and reassignment discussions.
At a Lansing PTA convention 2000 delegates gathered for the annual banquet. Governor Loren Dickinson attended as a guest and arrived late to the tune of the Beer Barrel Polka. His office said the governor felt the PTA was too social and entertainment-focused despite acknowledging PTA work in schools and community betterment.
Mrs. H. A. Tressel announces the local enlistment campaign for the Women’s Field Army Against Cancer will close Monday, April 29. The nationwide April drive has 135000 women actively involved, with committee members assisting Tressel including Mrs. Oliver Thure and others.
William Retner aged 58 died at his Marenisco home Sunday from a cerebral hemorrhage after two months of illness. Funeral services were held Tuesday with prayer at 2 pm and church rites at 2:30 pm, burial in Marenisco cemetery. Born January 12, 1882 in Barberton, he moved to Marenisco in 1914, married Ann Jones in August 1917, and worked at the local sawmill for 20 years. Survived by his wife, four daughters Adella Phyllis Annabelle and Mrs Lowel Engerson, all of Marenisco, and brother Philip Retner.
