County liquor bill in 1954 tops county budget total

Seventeen range mining men will participate in the 31st annual safety conference of the Lake Superior Mines Safety Council in Duluth in May 1920. Several spring real estate transfers were made this week. Mr and Mrs Robert Doney of East Pierce Street sold their home to Mrs Mary Luoma of Wakefield. The Doneys bought the Peter Sale property on Eddy Street, once owned by Alvin Sale and linked to Dr J R Franck. Chester Dillon and spouse sold a brick house near the old rock crusher on M-28 to Wilbert and wife Juntilla, who plan to relocate from Bessemer. Juntilla is an associate owner at Lakeside Memorial Chapel.

Don Brown resigns as Cheboygan city manager effective May to accept appointment as public adviser in Costa Rica with the Foreign Operations Administration. He and Mrs. Brown plan to depart May 25 for Washington for a three week orientation before moving to San Jose for a two year assignment. Brown previously served Wakefield as its first city manager from 1949 to 1950.

City Building Permits Include 15000 Dollar Job

Wakefield and Munising school bands finalize an exchange concert with a 2:45 Friday show at Munising. The 66 musicians, director, and chaperones travel by two buses, depart Wakefield at 6:00 AM, lunch at Mather Inn Ishpeming, and stay with local families. A tour of Munising paper mill and other sites occurs Saturday, with a meal at Mather Inn on the return.

Surplus groceries distributed to 138 Wakefield families
Surplus commodities were given to 138 families in Wakefield and Wakefield township at the Piggly Wiggly store on Tuesday under store manager August Tiberi. About 552 pounds of creamery butter, 353 pounds of rice, 363 pounds of beans, nearly 200 three pound cans of shortening, 180 pounds of cheese and 62 pounds of dried milk were included. Distribution occurs every third Tuesday for direct relief recipients and qualifying area families under county and state public assistance rules.
