Robert A. Burns Named Elk of the Year in Bessemer

Wakefield attorney Robert A. Burns will be honored as Elk of the Year at a royal banquet Thursday April 17 at 6 30 p m at the Bessemer Elks Club. Initiation of candidates follows the testimonial program with reservations via Michael A DeStasio Burns longtime Elk and civic leader has served in multiple Elks posts from exalted ruler in 1945 to grand inner guard and past Michigan Elks Association president. He is active in Rotary, the Gogebic Otontonagan Bar Association and Boy Scouts of America.

Bids Called On School Needs For Future Projects

School Supt. C E Kleimola presented a list of bids and quotations for the district. The board agreed to seek bids on a 66 72 passenger bus and a nine passenger station wagon. He requested quotations for typewriters for the Commercial Dept copying machine lighting fixtures elementary classroom furniture sewing machines and a hot water heater. Planned projects include athletic field work football equipment and a fire alarm at MacDonald School plus potential boiler replacements and summer building repairs to gym walls sash windows floors and hallways at Central and MacDonald schools and exterior doors and driveways at the senior high school. He explained the distinction between bids and quotations noting bids require specifications and a set date while quotations are not binding.

Wakefield PTA Hosts Monday Meeting With Dr Carl Horn

Dr J R Franck and wife host Wakefield PTA Monday evening April 20 at 7 30 in the music auditorium The guest speaker is Dr Carl Horn MSU professor of Education who will discuss Understanding Children Dancers from 2nd and 3rd grades and the Indianhead Chapter Sweet Adelines under Mrs Frank Catelli sing four part Barber shop harmony The Note Cracker Quartet and Lead section specialty numbers appear Costumes and senior high work displays are planned Lunch is served by the tenth grade parents Election of officers for the coming year is on the business agenda.

Wakefield Library Celebrates National Library Week

National Library Week runs April 12 to 18 at the Wakefield Public Library with librarian Mrs. Ray Walstrom inviting visitors and welcoming patrons old and new. Elected for the year are President H L Trezise Vice President Eugene Maki Secretary F W Duffin Treasurer Mauritz Bye mother at large Harold Graves. Visitors include Mrs Howard DuTemple and her sons Cliff Kirke and Richard from Sao Paulo Brazil staying with Victor Lepisto. Mrs DuTemple to join later. Also Mrs Ida Garz of Milwaukee visited the James Davey family with Mr and Mrs Larry Sternig and Chip.

Latin Club Banquet Immerses Guests in Roman Themed Evening

Latin II students and parents attended a Latin Club banquet in the high school cafeteria. Guests enjoyed a Roman decor, banners, crowns, wreaths, and togas as a three course dinner was served by students. A play Trial of the Goddesses was performed by Latin II students.

Conterio Re-elected Chairman of Gogebic County Board

B J Conterio, longtime Gogebic County supervisor from Marenisco, was re elected chairman at the annual re organization meeting. He is noted as the oldest serving member and has chaired budgets and finance, health and hospitals, roads and bridges, conservation and more. Two new members, Mrs Olga Hanson and Walter Nunimaker, joined the board.

Indianhead 4 H Club Plans and Visits

Indianhead 4 H Club met at JoAnn Haukkala’s home on Thursday April 9 at 7 p m. Members planned to attend a Ramsay talent show on Saturday April 11 and a get well card was sent to Bonnie Hal berg. A prairie session on the apron project followed the meeting. The next gathering is set for Thursday April 23 at 7 p m at Melita Juopperi’s home. Mrs E J Rintamaki and Mrs John C Novak with son Jeffery joined Roger Rintamaki to Kenosha Sunday evening and will travel to Sullivan Missouri to visit Mr and Mrs Jack Harju and family. Mrs Harju is the former Janice Rintamaki.

Sixty-six Seniors Set for June 2 Graduation

The Wakefield school board approved sixty six senior names for graduation on June 2 1964 contingent on students meeting current schedules and standards. The list includes Lawrence Anderson John Baker Judy Barringer Mary Ann Berga Dennis Bertetto Michael Bonello and many others. Wakefield voters will choose three members for the Wakefield Board of Education in the June 8 1964 election to fill two four year seats and one two year seat. Petitions are available at the high school superintendent's office with a final filing date of May 9. Voter registration closes May 11 and election results will be canvassed within three days of the vote. The new board organizational meeting is slated for July 6.

Flood drains toil as spring winds hit city

Robins and storms bring high winds rain and shrinking snow banks to the area. City crews work around the clock since noon Sunday to cope with rising floodwaters. Fire trucks pump water from Bedell and Third Ave toward the lake as basements flood. Crews press on pumping out water while the lake gate opens but frozen surface limits natural basin. Floods pale beside earthquake and tidal disaster.

Bergland high school seniors plan a April 25 departure to Trenary Chicago and New York arriving April 29 then Washington DC with visits to the Capitol White House Arlington Cemetery Lincoln Memorial and a breakfast with Rep. Local National Guard Update Berg Promoted In Germany

James E. Berg son of Erland J. Berg of 1412 Dewey Street was promoted March 19 to specialist four in Germany. He serves as a missile crewman with Battery B of the 333d Artillery, arrived overseas in June 1963, and is a 1962 Wakefield High School graduate.

School Board Reconsiders Salary Schedule Amid Debate

At a lengthy Monday meeting the Board of Education debated the salary schedule after teachers sought more time to return contracts. A motion to revisit the teachers requests passed after votes from Wasielewski Junttila Tiberi and Trezise, with Valesano abstaining.

Rotary Club Slides Show Deer Herd in Michigan

Wakefield Rotary Club heard colored narrated slides on the Deer Herd in Michigan. Robert Raffing answered questions after the film as chairman Harry Trezise introduced him. The reel covered deer starvation efforts, new forestry management, and the antlerless season’s role in herd preservation. Guests included William Kuivinen and Dr. J. R. Franck with Robert Swerth attending.
