G R Connor outlines new ways to extend wood use and reduce waste through glues laminated lumber and wood by products. He cites Ford Iron Mountain as a model of rapid glued frame production and urges focus on wood chemistry and bonded materials for future industry.
A new kiln and drying shed will streamline lumber processing, enabling direct loading to railroad cars. The facility will hold 115000 cubic feet of lumber in a 28 by 100 foot kiln with 23 foot clearance and an adjacent 80 by 100 foot warehouse. Fork lift trucks will move stock in and out, reducing handling time and avoiding clinker formation. Direct radio communication aims to cut time and confusion.
The Men's Club of First Lutheran Church schedules a turkey dinner Sunday from 4 to 8 p m in church parlors with tickets sold by members. Announcement: birth of son Douglas Bruce to Mr and Mrs Robert Duncan of Robbinsdale Minnesota born April 2. Father employed at Honeywell Minneapolis. Grandparents Mr and Mrs Kenneth Duncan of Hinsing Minnesota.
The Class of 1948 graduate Miss Piccldi Becomer married Romagnoli at St Marys Church Wakefield at 9 a.m. Saturday. The bride wore a gray two piece suit and was accompanied by Miss Marie Nora of Iron Mountain. A dinner for 35 followed at the bride’s home and the couple planned a wedding trip before settling in Iron Mountain where the groom works.
To Address Supervisors Clare J. Haskins of the county welfare commission is among speakers for the spring meeting of the Upper Peninsula Association of Boards of Supervisors this weekend. Mr and Mrs George Kovales returned from a visit with relatives in Detroit.
A daytime fire gutted a Wakefield building on Lahti Street destroying the structure and claiming the lives of Peter Trezise and Mrs. Ivan Buck along with several residents. Twelve people lived in the building, including Ewing, Aiken, Kahabka, the Buck family, and the Trezise household. Authorities deem it the city’s worst blaze in memory while Fire Chief Bill Sae led the six hour effort to suppress the flames.
A mobile x ray unit will visit Wakefield to screen adults for tuberculosis. The clinic at the ice rink near the high school campus runs Monday Wednesday Thursday 9:30 12 1 4 30 and Tuesday 1 5 and 6 8 30.Registrants fill cards and receive normal results by mail or see their family doctor if advised. Mrs Joseph Gill in charge reports Thursday morning the Wakefield Woman's club led by Mrs John Thom and Thursday afternoon St Mary's Altar society led by Mrs John Delmet coordinate daily assistants.
