Governor Williams leads a Democrat government facing a $22 million 1948 49 deficit with projections to $71 million for 1949 50. Legislature split with Republicans seeks restraint while considering a 5 or 4 percent profits tax, unemployment reforms, and broader tax plans amid strained local revenue sharing.
William Novak leaves this week end for East Lansing to enter the Michigan State Police Training school. He is the son of Mr and Mrs William Novak.
Wakefield names Donald Brown city manager, aims to start a new water supply project immediately. He and city accountant William Jacobson drafted a budget for the May council meeting, with a $500,000-plus annual city outlay and Brown’s $4500 starting salary plus $300 car allowance. Brown, 25, veteran of WWII, comes from El Dorado to supervise a lean government amid disagreements on his appointment.
City funds show an April 1 cash balance of 30,485.81 dollars according to city accountant William Jacobson. In March receipts totaled 47,465.92 with warrants paid of 36,946.10. Delinquent taxes led the income at nearly 34,000 dollars.
The Wakefield high school band unveils its complete program for the annual spring concert. The event will take place at the Wakefield theatre on Tuesday April 26 with tickets sold by band members. Proceeds go to the high school band fund. Mrs Tom Ginolfi and her children left for Stamford Conn to join Mr Ginolfi, accompanied by Douglas Maki. Harold Hoffman of Bessemer also departed for Stamford. Mr and Mrs William Joyce and daughter Jean from Chicago are visiting Mrs Joyce's mother Mrs A Cormier and other relatives.
The army will accept 410 Michigan men in April, doubling its quota. Applicants aged 17 to 35, without prior service, who are physically fit and score 90 on tests can enlist. The force emphasizes higher standards but maintains education and promotional opportunities. air force quota remains 162 for April.
Acting Chief Matt Hill reports the first week of the Brake and Light Check Program. Sixteen motorists were stopped for traffic violations and their brakes examined. twelve had dangerous conditions and twelve lights were defective. Repairs are being arranged and motorists urged to service their cars for safe operation.
Wakefield school system announces three teachers will not return next year. Roy Olson Bernard Urbaniak and Mrs Shirley Pennock made decisions. Pennock retires Urbaniak plans further studies Olson undecided. Marenisco board approves Velma Butler and Lempi Koivu for positions next year. Butler to teach high school Koivu elementary grades.
Mr and Mrs Walter Fisher announce the engagement of their daughter Jean to Adolph Bugni son of Mr and Mrs John Bugni Jr of Wakefield A June wedding is planned Miss Fisher a Wakefield High School graduate class of 1946 is a secretary for Dr J R Franck of Wakefield Mr Bugni a Navy veteran after the war attends Gogebic Junior College Ironwood Jean and Joan Rydeski employed in Duluth have arrived to spend Easter with their parents City Clerk and Mrs Chester Rydeski.
Mrs Joseph Patyk and others travel Easter visits to Detroit Marquette and West Coast cities while several NMU students spend holidays with families in Wakefield. First Lutheran Church prepares special Easter services including sunrise English Finnish language worship and a full program featuring choirs readings and organ solos.
The Rev. F. J. Lunn of Rock Island has accepted a call to Immanuel Lutheran Church in Wakefield. He will visit in May and begin active duties in September. Lunn, 40, ordained June 10 1945 at Moline, has served Bruno Minnesota and dual Illinois charges, and oversees synod book distribution. Easter sunrise service at 6:00 a.m. with Sunday school at 9:15, worship at 10:30, program by Sunday school children at 7:30 p.m.
University of Minnesota basketball coach Ozzie Cowles addressed 195 Rotary Club members at the Community building. He defended high school basketball, urged scholastic grades as the standard for team selection, noted height helps but fast, skilled players can prevail, and credited teachers and prior coaches including John Sartoris and Stretch Goedde.
The Order of Eastern Star recognized its two oldest charter members, Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Olson, at a Wednesday evening meeting. They received tokens of appreciation. the program included cards, group singing, and a luncheon. Mrs. Olson had recently returned from Arizona seeking arthritis relief, while Mr. Olson spent winter with daughter Mrs. Reeder Hubbell in Kalamazoo.
Chase Salmon Osborn, 89, former Michigan governor and famed crusading editor, died Monday at his Georgia home after long battles with pneumonia and heart trouble. Born Jan 22 1860 in Indiana, he rose from a log cabin start to publish papers and serve as governor from 1911 to 1913, promoting reform and clean government. He lived a vigorous life, marrying his adopted daughter’s former papers were voided and spent retirement at Possum Poke in Georgia and Duck Island near Sault Ste Marie, writing, traveling, and campaigning for causes. He remained a colorful public figure and staunch Roosevelt ally throughout.
