Mine Interests Must Obtain Tax Relief, Official Says

Alex D. Chisholm senior manager of Pickands Mather addresses Ironwood Rotary and Kiwanis clubs urging reduction of municipal and county expenses. He notes mining companies cut costs since 1929, but taxes remained high, citing Wakefield where 95 percent of city taxes come from the mines. Ish license fight is lost in Michigan House

Proponents push for a general 60 cent fishing license. bill sent back to committee with general license eliminated and a $1 resident trout license substituted. Nonresident licenses rise to $2 and revenue funds trout propagation. County options debated for a 50 cent fee on non trout fishing. Representative O Neill doubts a general rod license can pass.

Power Company and City Reach Three Year Pact

The Lake Superior District Power Company and the city commission reached a three year contract on Wednesday evening. Wakefield will get electricity for distribution at nine percent above the past ten year rate. A Verona and Plymouth line adjustment will be set by a three engineer board, with projected savings from reduced overconsumption.

Township Board Chooses Fred K Brandt as Supervisor

The Ward township board organized for the coming year at a special meeting Thursday afternoon with Fred K Brandt named supervisor amid rumors a protest would be filed over his residency. Dr R I C Prout named health officer, Victor Lemmer accounting officer, and Robert A Burns attorney. Arnie Nikula cannot qualify as member on the board of review due to not being a township taxpayer.

Y H Hanson returned Monday eve on visit with friends at Mr. and Mrs. Robert Lee have gone to Calumet Mich to spend the Easter holidays with Mr. Lee's mother. Mr. and Mrs. Paul Carlson have Ivan DelFavero returned Tuesday from Ashland where he has been recuperating. Mr. and Mrs. James Cummings hosted visitors Friday morn for relatives. Gertrude Nikula teacher in Manitowoc spending spring vacation with Mr. and Mrs. Erickson Ostling and son of Roscommon Mich returned home after visiting R. T. Seat. Mr. Gustafson visiting a relative. Mr. and Mrs. Donald Brake have hosted guests. Brake in charge of engineering on several projects. A regular meeting of the local club will be held Saturday evening. The post has doubled its membership this year. a majority of 120 members expected. Ed Good of Ionia was a business visitor. Mrs. Richard Bennetts was honored at a surprise shower at Castile. guests included Oscar Hendrickson, Onni So and many others. Mrs. Bennetts was formerly Miss Aila Hill.

Pioneer Mr Simms Dies After Stroke in Wakefield

Death claims well known pioneer Isaac Simms who had lived in Wakefield 27 years. Born October 11 1869 in Dalton England he moved to the United States with early years in Oklahoma Utah before settling in Wakefield. Survived by widow and four daughters and six sons. Funeral services set in Wakefield with Rev G G Gill and others involved.

Drivers Warned on 1932 License Plates Deadline

Motorists face arrest for failure to obtain 1932 plates as officials explain the law allows permits until August 1 if information is lacking. In many areas people believe the half price applies before April 1, but the statute extends coverage to August 1 when permits cease to be effective.

Wakefield Iron to Join Idle Mines

After ten months of operation the Wakefield Iron company will close its Wakefield mine for an indefinite period citing completion of an emergency program. About 100 men worked six hours daily for seven days a week, with nearly 300000 tons mined and 200000 tons in surface stock awaiting demand. Inland Steel Co may take a sizable tonnage later, while Sunday Lake mine likely closes for the summer beginning May 1. An tonnage stockpile of 700000 tons exists between Lake and Wakefield mines, surpassing half of normal yearly shipments in the district.
