Local families travel and host across Easter weekend with relatives from Marquette Detroit Kenosha Duluth and beyond. Church events include the Mary Circle meeting and LCW assembly. Public figures and students share travels and campus ties at NMU Stout College and St. Johns Seminary.
The LCW general meeting at First Lutheran is set for Wednesday April 20 at 7 30. The program chair is Mrs Isaac Saari and features Finnish language poem by Anna Bay a Finnish duet by Mr and Mrs Arnold Perry and a worship service themed Christ the Fountain focusing on life. Participants include Mrs Vienna Hill Mrs Duane Lane Mrs Arnold Korpi and Mrs Carl Pikka with a second duet by Fia Hill and Mary Ann Rolando I Know that My Redeemer Lives congregational singing rounds out the program. The executive board meets at 7:00 prior to the meeting.
Wakefield Rotary heard a film titled Operation Teenager about four Texas prison inmates and their paths, shown as a prevention message to high school students. Cosmo Bonello stood in for absent Rotarian Tom Falk. Visitors Fred Sakarias Virginia Minn and Ken Gustafson Ironwood attended at the Lakeview Inn.
Wakefield residents may donate to cancer research as the annual Cancer Drive runs April 18 to 22. Volunteers list routes covering streets from Ascherman to Hancock and beyond with dozens of named workers canvassing neighborhoods and businesses.
Wakefield Parent Teacher Association schedules a Monday April 18 meeting at 7 30 p m in the high school music auditorium. Mrs Anna Petroski will present forensic students and Miss Barbara Schoeb will conduct Madrigal Sagers. Election of officers will be held and lunch will follow served by tenth grade mothers chaired by Mrs John Negri Jr.
Milo Kronsich, former Wakefield high school teacher and Riverview High School counselor in Wyndette Michigan, attended the American Personnel and Guidance Association convention in Washington DC during April 4 7. The 8000 counselors discussed aiding disadvantaged youth elder citizens emotionally disturbed and vocational education amid technological change. Easter weekend visitors to the Lepisto home included Clyde Lepisto’s family from Escanaba and Duluth.
Mrs Arnold Swanson was elected president of the Wakefield Woman's Club at a high school auditorium meeting on Wednesday. New officers include Mrs Arnold Korpi first vice president Mrs Ben Dianich second vice president and others. The event featured music and readings and a social lunch followed by an Easter themed display in the Home Ec area. The Junior Class of Wakefield High plans the April 22 prom with the theme Blue Moon and Dick's Music Masters providing the music.
Erland Henry Harju age 83 of 1136 East N St Springfield Oregon died in a local hospital April 9. A retired carpenter he lived in Springfield nine years and was born January 11 1883 in Finland arriving in the United States in 1903. Survived by son Viljo Harju daughter Mrs Dean Knudsen Aberdeen Wash two step sisters Mrs Ernst Swanson and Mrs Hilda Kruutari six grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Funeral services held April 12 at Burns Frederickson Funeral Home officiated by Pastor William King with private interment in Lane Memorial Gardens.
Wakefield Board of Education met Monday evening and approved a resolution on Equal Employment Opportunity. The session covered enrollments, attendance, finances, and upcoming events including Madrigal Singers at Eau Claire and track meets across Michigan and the Upper Peninsula.
