Coach McCoy Urges Limits On Athletic Recruiting Ties

Coach Ernie McCoy told Rotary Club members that academics must come first for college athletes and warned against cash offers, jobs, and favors used to lure players. Wakefield Woman's Club Endorses Prout for National Post

The Wakefield club endorses Mrs. R. I. C. Prout for treasurer of the General Federation of Women's Clubs to meet in June. Prout has led the Wakefield club, presided state federation, and served on national committees. Dimiter Dimitroff to lead local club again. officers named include Anderson, Haller, Cloon, Walter, and Anderson.

City-Wide Street Repairs Planned This Season

City manager Don Brown says Wake field streets will receive 32 000 square yards of black top this summer if council approves a total expenditure of 11000 dollars. The plan uses 35 cents per square yard through the county road commission with higher costs if grading or different mixtures are chosen.

J. H. Kent Re-elected Mayor In Brief City Meeting

J H Kent was re-elected mayor by unanimous vote at the city council organizational meeting on Monday night. E P Cormier named mayor pro tem, with Andy Lake supporting. The council also approved four members to the county board of supervisors and formed a city wide industrial committee. Layne Northwest plans preliminary water exploration tests south of the city this week.

Beaver Pelts Bring Lower Prices at Sales

The regional conservation office reports the 1950 trapping season saw blanket pelts average 22 to 26 dollars and large skins 18 to 20 dollars. Wakefield issued 298 trapping licenses and sealed 328 hides plus 17 otters. Prices dropped from 75 to 80 dollars two years earlier.

Easter visits span Wakefield with university students

Local residents host students spending Easter recess from the University of Michigan and University of Wisconsin. Many Wakefield families welcome sons and daughters home from Detroit to Ann Arbor and Chicago areas, with mothers visiting relatives and students preparing for tours and exams.

Leonard J McManman was elected chairman of the county board of supervisors for the third consecutive year on Tuesday. The Ironwood attorney, and city commissioner, was renamed without opposition.

First Water Tests Show Good Supply for Wakefield

The preliminary test at Well No. 2 yielded 48,000 gallons in eight hours, 10 gallons per minute, with water levels dropping 32 inches then rising back. City Manager Don Brown noted levels started at 21 ft 7 in and ended 24 ft 3.5 in below start. A 100-foot spillway guarded against seepage.

Widows Can Get Aid Under Social Security Law

Widows of wage earners may qualify for Old Age and Survivors Insurance benefits. A widow 65 or older receives monthly payments. if under 65 she may get monthly checks with minor children in care, or a lump sum with eligibility for later monthly benefits at 65 if not remarrying. An application is required even without designation of a beneficiary, and a representative will visit Ironwood employment office at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday April 26.

County tax boost raises Wakefield property burden

Wakefield taxpayers would pay about two dollars more per thousand of assessed value for county purposes if the county board action is adopted by the city council. The equalization committee raised county valuation to 34,000,000 with Wakefield up 17.5 percent. Ironwood up about 10 percent and Bessemer township up about 12 percent. The council may spread the increase over all local property and cut the city tax rate to 18.7 mills or collect only the county tax on the higher valuation.

Wakefield High Band Presents Annual Spring Concert

The Wakefield high school band will perform its annual spring concert at the Wakefield theatre on Tuesday April 25. Tickets are on sale by band members. Director Carl E Nelson has arranged a program featuring band ensemble numbers instrumental solos and other features with about 60 members on stage. The program includes Mary Lou Kerkes piano solo Bette Beber clarinet solo Philip Cormier drum solo a cornet trio Roy Maki Mary Trolla and Donald Walstrom fantasy with band accompaniment and Philip Johnson trombone solo. The band will debut its new uniforms at this concert.

Pupils Visit Wakefield Library For Readiness Day

About 400 elementary students from Wakefield schools toured the library on Thursday with their teachers. Librarian Mrs. Margaret Taylor and assistant Miss Alfe Windberg oversaw the event which enrolled many new borrowers and issued 289 books.
