A columnist reflects on the role of historians and readers in interpreting postwar Michigan coverage. It recalls several 1942–1943 Michigan Mirror pieces forecasting a multi-year war, arms production challenges, and the need for sacrifice, noting skepticism about quick victory and the heavy cost ahead.
Plans and surveys for postwar highway construction progress rapidly in Michigan's Upper Peninsula. A $120 million program is envisioned with $10 million planned already, 23 survey crews at work, and projects spread across all counties to relieve wartime restrictions and provide jobs for veterans. Routes include M-28 from McMillan to Newberry, US-2 between Bessemer and Wakefield, US-41 near Ishpeming, and several Chippewa County improvements such as a Munuscong River bridge and 22-foot concrete road upgrades.
The local Legion post approved establishing a consulting service for veterans discharged from duty to help with compensation and disability problems. I L Voyer was authorized to appoint a Legonnnaire to assist World War II veterans and William Jacobson was proposed as liaison officer. John Buddy Lane was named to attend Boys State at East Lansing, with trip costs covered by the Legion. Contributions to Red Cross and Crippled Children’s Seal sale approved, and a three member committee authorized to plan the May 30 observance. July 4th celebration duties assigned to the Legion.
Wakefield slowly nears its Red Cross quota as the campaign closes. Stray contributions arrive daily, pushing totals above 2100 dollars though the target was 2650. Teachers and staff average about 2.55 dollars per person in contributions.
Miss Mildred Doucette daughter of Mr and Mrs Arthur Doucette 602 Neidhold avenue is valedictorian. Miss Laurette Hanson daughter of Mr and Mrs Hang A Hanson 1401 Anderson avenue is salutatorian. Both attended Wakefield schools. Doucette also distinguished in speech drill team Tatler Drama club and Stagecraft. Hanson recently received the DAR Good Citizenship Award. Doucette will deliver the farewell address June 7. Hanson will give the welcome.
The State Social Welfare Commission liberalized regulations and increased appropriations boosting Old Age Assistance Childrens Aid and Aid to the Blind during March. The supervisor notes a drop in Aid to Dependent Children cases from 181 to 154 year over year as more mothers enter war work and many ADC recipients sons join the armed forces seeking allowances to support families.
Robert A. Burns will lead a Juvenile Delinquency talk at the district Rotary conference in Green Bay on Monday April 24. Maj. Peter W. Rainer will discuss the British 8th Army campaign in Tunisia. Mrs Isabel Anderson announces the marriage of her daughter Helen to A W Boline of Bessemer, son of Mrs Leontine Boline.
Ion ore shipments from Michigan mines in 1943 are compared with 1942 totals. Sgt Helen Laakso, first Wakefield woman in the Marine Corps Womens Reserve, enlisted in Detroit in June 1943 and after training was sent to the Los Angeles Procurement Office, daughter of Mr and Mrs Alfred Laakso.
Mr and Mrs Tony Stoykovich of Cemetery location died after a Sunday crash near Minocqua Wisconsin with their car heating and bursting into flames. A five gallon gasoline can in the car is believed to have exploded and hindered rescue efforts. Funeral services were held in Rhinelander with Mrs Helen Gembolis attending. George Smolich has been wounded and received the Purple Heart and is back on duty in the South Pacific. Harold J Richards of the state conservation commission will speak at a sportsmen meeting at the Elks club rooms in Bessemer Sunday afternoon. the public is invited.
The Wakefield Co-op association will meet this Friday evening at 7 30 in the Temperance hall. The annual audit will be read and other business for the store will be transacted. A luncheon will be served to attending members after the meeting.
Mrs. Nick Keski has been admitted for medical attention. Sharon Lee Forte seven month old daughter of Mr and Mrs Andrew Forte has been admitted for treatment for pneumonia. Mildred Peltola Ramsay has been dismissed after six weeks of treatment for a fractured ankle.
The notice lists a regular worship service at 9:30 on Sunday with special choir music, Sunday school at 10:45, and a Thursday choir rehearsal at 6:30. Pastor J. H. Oatey is noted.
The county board of supervisors will convene Monday morning for its first meeting of the new fiscal year. Chairman Nor bert Achatz is expected to be reappointed presiding officer for another year. Board personnel remain unchanged as no township elections are scheduled this spring.
Auxiliary of the Legion will host Judge Wright and Auxiliary Judge Robert Wright to address the juvenile problem at a Tuesday evening gathering. Full attendance of members is requested. Mrs. Raymond Walstrom has returned from Norway after attending the funeral of her aunt, Mrs. Margaret Hosking, 76.
Arthur Haug a discharged city mechanic waived all claims for re instatement under the ex service men act in a communication to the city commission at its meeting Wednesday night and the commission accepted it without comment. Little other business of importance came before the commission and the session lasted under an hour. Mayor L G Wilson urged writing state officials about a May 11 tax commission meeting in the county to discuss matters prior to the Bessem er hearing. Commission approved tavern license renewals for Mose Giansante John Pezzetti and James Ruffatto and granted Goldie Bolo permission to apply to the state liquor control commission. Diva E Maki proposed razing an old garage and rebuilding near his Sunday Lake residence. Alex Harju sought removal of a building on Sunday Lake street to lot 4 and tied a tavern license to that removal. City Engineer Nels Simonson and City Attorney Robert Burns were authorized to visit Houghton for flood control talks. City finances showed a healthy March balance. Seals drive by local schoolchildren aims to help crippled county children with half funds staying local and half to a state agency.
The county holds its annual public hearings on mineral property valuations at Les semer on May 11. The state tax commission will hear protests about valuations set on mine properties for tax purposes.
