Arthur Moran a former Wakefield resident died Saturday April 8 in Wisconsin Rapids after a long illness He opened a modern dry cleaning business in Wakefield in the mid 1930s ran it 20 years then moved to Wisconsin Rapids where he and his wife continued the same type of business He was active in the Chamber Rotary Knights of Columbus and served on the Board of Education He is survived by his wife Cecilia two daughters Donna Hughes and Martyn Nystrom Funeral services were held April 11 at Sacred Heart Church in Marionette Robert Burns attended the service

Registrations Open for Presidential Primary in City and Township
Friday May 14 is the last day to register for the presidential primary in the city and township. The clerk's office opens 8 am to 8 pm to register, with township offices also staying open. City clerk Martha Jueppers notes 55 registrations so far, about half under 21.

Successful Card Party Held Saturday at Masonic Temple
A Wakefield card party at the Masonic Temple drew attendees from Victory Chapter and nearby orders. Honors in bridge went to Harry Sutter, smear to Ernst Trettin, canasta to Mrs. Robert Lawrie, cribbage to Varley Walberg, and five hundred to Mrs. Vernon Carr. Expansion plans for Empire Mine and related facilities announced
Cleveland Cliffs Iron Co. plans a second 65 million expansion of the Empire Mine to be finished mid-1974, creating 300 jobs for over 900 total and boosting annual pellet capacity by 1.8 million tons to 3.48 million. The project, costing 165 million plus 10.5 million for pollution controls, involves joint ownership with five partners and requires Water Resources Commission approval. Meanwhile Upper Peninsula Generating Co. will add two units at Presque Isle Station in Marquette over three years for about 55 million, plus 4.2 million for emission controls, and 16 million tons of pellet output is projected by 1975 across both mines. Separately, 423 Michigan Tech students made the winter Dean’s List with a 3.5 GPA or higher, including 110 straight-A students. Wakefield honorees include Peter J. Bruno and Daniel P. Mestnik. Mr and Mrs R Zakicki of Cheyenne, Wyoming visited here last week.

John L Maki Dies at Medical Care Facility
John L Maki 80 of Drier Road Wakefield died early Friday after a long illness while a patient at Gogebic Medical Care Facility where he had been since 1970. Born January 13 1891 in Kauhajoki Finland he came to the United States as a young man settling first in Sunbury Canada Copper Cliff for a year before moving to Wakefield. He had never married and is survived by a brother Nicholas Vahamaki and sister Hannah Vahamaki both in Finland. Funeral services were held at Lakeside Memorial Chapel with Rev Wayne Kuusisto officiating and burial followed at Lakeside Cemetery. Mr and Mrs Don Rostollan and son Donny of Waukesha Wis and Mrs Emma Rostollan visited over the weekend at the HIll and Heikkinen homes and with other relatives.
