The Untamala Community Choir of Ylistaro Finland tours the US and Canada performing ten concerts. On April 16 at 7 30 p m they sing in Finnish at First Lutheran Church Wakefield inviting all. The 17 voice group directed by Helena Saari features Pastor Osso Haaramaki and Arvi Kallio. Concerts in Michigan include Negaunee and Wakefield with free will offering and a social hour after.
Wakefield Central School Library hosted the Parents Advisory Council Title I gathering led by President Mrs Wayne Kuusisto. The agenda covered December meeting highlights, Title I room tours, Alpena minutes, upcoming Compensatory Education Conference in Grand Rapids, and proposed letters to congressmen to support Title I.
The L Anse High School Choir will sing at Wakefield High School gym at 7:30 PM on Tuesday April 17 as part of an exchange concert with Wakefield. The 60 member choir directed by John Bruno will perform sacred and secular selections. Bruno is a Wakefield High School graduate. Admission is free.
The Wakefield High School 1973 Western U P baseball schedule lists games from June 4 to July 11 with venues, dates, and start times. Non league games are designated.
D-Sgt Louis Orlich 48 of the Romeo post is promoted April 8 to the 11 level detastisvation. He joined MSP in 1950 serving at Niles L Anse Ithaca Warren and Romeo. He has meritorious service citation and is a World War II Marine veteran with five children.
Funeral services for John R. Kohtala 46 of Cheyenne Wyoming were held at the Wiederspahn Chapel of the Chimes. The Rev Lew Meisner officiated and burial was at Beth El. Kohtala died at Warren Air Force Base Hospital after 23 1 2 years of service. He served in World War II the Korean Conflict and Vietnam and was a Marine recruiter in Cheyenne from 196 to 1965. He was survived by his wife Arlene Zawicki Kohtala two children Carol Wallace and John Kohtala plus a grandchild Corky Wallace and two aunts Mrs Anna Salmela and Mrs Iva Gasbocek.
The Mary Circle meets today at 1 30 p m. Senior Choir practices tonight at 6 30 p m. Worship services are Sunday at 9 30 a m in Finnish and 10 45 a m in English. Sunday School meets at 9 30 a m. Finnish Choir Concert is Monday at 7 30 p m and Youth Choir rehearses Tuesday at 6 30 p m.
Wakefield city hall invites applications for summer jobs including lifeguards park attendants and general laborers. Applications accepted through the end of April at city hall. Attend the concert Monday.
Wakefield businessman and musician Johnny Voit known as Big Bad John will be the first guest on Briarpatch on KDAL Channel 3. He will perform on April 14 singing Walk Through This World with Me and playing lead guitar, then again on April 28 to play fiddle and harmonize with the Briars.
Carl E. Kleimiola chaired the Rotary Club dinner meeting at the High School where a film on Career Education was shown. Guests John Raykovich and Tom Wilkinson of Ironwood attended. two new Uthroters Michael Ravelli Wakefield and Darin Silkworth Bessemer were inducted.
Wakefield residents report three month Florida vacations visiting Englewood Zephyrhills and Orlando to see former neighbors and family. Others spent winter in Florida and returned via Kenosha and Green Bay. Council set meeting date. area art league to meet. Wakefield students excelled at Ashland solo and ensemble festival with multiple honors across classes and divisions.
Regular worship services will be held Sunday at 10 30 am. The Sunday School meets at 9 am. The childrens choir practices Tuesday at 3 20 pm. Senior confirmation class meets Tuesday at 4 pm. Junior confirmation class meets Wednesday at 4 pm. The Senior Choir practices Thursday at 7 30 pm. Holy Communion Thursday 7 30 pm. Good Friday service at 1 pm.
The Gogebic-Ontonagon Intermediate School District Board appoints deputy superintendent Thomas Ferguson as district superintendent and sends letters of intent to all district employees. The board also hires Leroy W. Limakka as the new district vocational education implementer to replace Ferguson. Ferguson, a Northern Michigan University graduate with previous Detroit and West Iron County experience, and his wife Harriet have six children.
Mrs. Phillip Barbera, 74, of 112 Second Ave No Hurley, died Sunday afternoon at Grand View Hospital after seven weeks as a patient. Survivors include her widower and four sons including Peter Red Barbera of Wakefield, 12 grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Funeral held Wednesday at 9 a.m. at St Mary Catholic Church officiated by Rev Clarence Ludwig.
The Wakefield High School 1973 track schedule lists events starting April 18 at Bessemer, then April 25 away at Bessemer, May 5 Ontonagon Invitational away, May 8 M W track meet at Hurley, May 16 freshman invitational at Hurley, May 19 regional meet at White Pine, and May 26 U P meet at Marquette with start times noted.
