Governor Williams pushes a constitutional convention after an assumed reapportionment and argues for a 4 percent corporate tax to fix Michigan finances. He insists the tax would be phased in, protect new businesses, and not raise prices until profits begin, while noting 33 states already tax corporations.
Wakefield's new city council for 1952 53 will hold its first formal session Monday April 21 to organize and name a mayor and mayor pro tem. Members include James H Trebilcock George Westlund Joe Patyk J H Kent and Elmer Lusa. Trebilcock leads the election with 618 votes, followed by Westlund 539 Patyk 532.
Nine beer and wine and liquor license applications in Wakefield were approved by the city council subject to police chief and health officer approval. Licenses granted include C Strough Leo Brennan James Ruffatto Putnam Tavern Patyk s Tavern and Bugni s Bar with additional permits for Mezzano s Lake View Inn Wakefield Inn Crossing Inn Old Italian Grill and James Bugni. Tavern licenses cost 150 yearly and liquor licenses 500 yearly with 85 percent of fees returned to the city for police and liquor inspections.
Trooper Richard Terpstra will report for assignment in the traffic division at the state police headquarters in East Lansing on April 21. He has served here for two years. Replacing him locally will be Recruit Robert Stadt of Grand Rapids, who recently completed nine weeks of training at the East Lansing police school.
The Wakefield Rotary club appointed Arthur Moran as president for the 1952 53 year. August Tiberi was named vice president Ed Sponberg secretary and Victor Lepisto treasurer with George Meholick Rodney Hodge and Harold Marshall as directors to outline the coming program.
Easter services at First Lutheran Church feature an early English service at 6 and a Finnish service at 7 30 with Rev S V Autere preaching and choir music. A public reception for Mr and Mrs Jacob Kujala follows in the afternoon with no evening service.
The Wakefield schools have been approved by the state department of public instruction for the coming year. The local system complies with state aid continuance and accepts tuition paying pupils under state rules.
The 1952 Cancer Crusade of the American Cancer Society begins Tuesday in Wakefield and runs through April. Chairs Mrs. Edward Novak and Mrs. Peter Petranek lead a house to house canvass with local volunteers listed. Joseph Grasso family from Milwaukee spend Easter with Emil Grasso Sr.
Joseph Gill a Plymouth mine office clerk and longtime observer notes total snowfall this winter reaches about 127 inches up to Thursday. He reports 53 inches before Jan 1 and 73 inches from Jan 1 to Apr 9 with 37 inches in March and 12 inches in the first nine days of April. He forecasts cloudy wet weather March 20 to April 20 and continued low sunshine into May with a season total around 150 inches.
April notices report births at Divine Hospital of Prague including Emil Torkko and baby girls born to the Hill and Kahila families. Discharges list include Ida Rajala and multiple mothers with babies, with other medical events and names across Ramsay Bessemer Ironwood and Marenisco.

Wakefield faces a decision after a Lansing conference on water and power lines for a new source. City manager George Meholick plans to brief specialists and state engineers with test data and samples, awaiting guidance on next steps and funding.
Miss Sylvia Oja, chief clerk of the city licensing department, warns more than 100 dogs risk destruction after May 1 if their owners do not purchase licenses. Only 43 tags have been sold, and many previously licensed dogs lack current 1952 buttons.
Ore loading started late last week at the Sunday Lake mine pockets while Hanna Iron Ore Company has shipped ore since March 21 from Wakefield lean ore piles. Shipped by rail to Escanaba, the ore blends with grades from Iron River district mines. Shipments to Ashland docks from the range are expected to start early next week.
J. W. Thomas, Wake field schools superintendent, said this week that only one teacher has not signed a contract for the 1952 53 school year. The lone holdout is considering a position in southern Michigan.
Wakefield schools closed since Wednesday afternoon for Easter recess will reopen Tuesday, April 15.
