Wakefield to Joint Mayor Exchange As Michigan Week Plans Advance

Wakefield City Council authorized participation in the annual Mayor exchange day for Michigan Week May 21 to May 26 marking the second such cooperation. Talks involved Kingston in Tuscola County potential exchange, while reports noted safe drinking water, February municipal court and fire activity, and a call to study time changes amid local union concerns. Immanuel Lutheran events and a local youth’s TV fly tying feat were also highlighted.

School Assembly Show By Carl Josephs Archery Champ

The Carl Josephs, a nine time champion long bow archer, will headline an all school assembly at Wakefield High School gym on Monday April 9 at 1 50. Josephs is rated among the nation's top archers and has hunted deer pheasants and wolves during open season. His wife Mrs Josephs provides an engaging foil for the exhibition which has delighted audiences in schools sports shows and theaters. Patrons are invited to attend.

James Menzano Jr. superintendent of Marenisco School injured his left knee ligament near the kneecap in a fall and has been off duty at home for a week. He remains on crutches but able to perform some duties while still considered disabled.

Maki Bugni Lake Elected As Councilmen In City Election

Newcomer Bernhardt Maki wins city council seat with 638 votes and Adolph Bugni follows with 615. Andy E Lake becomes third member with 578 as Joseph Patyk is eliminated with 509 votes. Justice of the Peace Anton L Bracket is unopposed with 812 votes. Absentee ballots total 126 of 138 requested. total votes cast 1135 with one spoiled. The board will be Kent Lusa Maki Bugni and Lake for a two year term, reorganizing April 16 to select Mayor and Mayor-Pro-tem.

Miner Killed by Rock Fall at Peterson Mine

George B. Stevens 33 of Wakefield was killed at 5 45 p m Friday when a rock slab fractured his skull at the Peterson mine in Bessemer. He was on the second shift removing timber after blasting on the 26th level. Born August 24 1922 in Norway Mich he leaves a wife three children and relatives in Negaunee and Norway. Funeral services were held in Norway.

Finnish Finnish Lutheran Church parishioner dies at 76

Mrs. Maria Helsten of National Mine, born in Lapua Finland March 21 1880, died at home Tuesday morning. She lived in National Mine 54 years and is survived by five sons, three daughters, two sisters, 21 grandchildren and four great grandchildren. Funeral services were held at National Mine with Lutheran Church rites. Wakefield attendees listed.
