John Holland Drops Bid for Michigan Legislature

John Holland of Bessemer, longtime Gogebic County representative, announces he will not seek re election in September citing impaired health after a December 1928 influenza attack. He shares views on eight hour work day, worker protections, and a local teachers training school for the Upper Peninsula.

Wakefield Woman's Club Elects Directors for Year

Mrs. Peter J. Delmet was elected president for the second year at the Wakefield Woman's club meeting on Wednesday afternoon. Luncheon preceded the 1:00 pm session. New officers include First Vice President Mrs. Arthur Mann and Second Vice President Mrs. Roy W. Bedell. Secretary is Mrs. C. W. Bemer and Treasurer Mrs. John Honzik. Directors for the year are the officers plus Mrs. J. M. Hammer, Mrs. H. A. Tressel, Mrs. H. J. Richards, Mrs. R. I. C. Prout and Mrs. W. S. Peters.

Director of Wakefield Iron Company Buried

David F. Thompson assistant to the president and a director of Inland Steel and the Wakefield Iron company died at Miami Beach last week. Funeral held in Newcastle Pennsylvania. He was years old. His entire fortune of 5,000 dollars left to his 15 year old son there being no will found for division of the estate.

Protest over Early Dates for Upper Peninsula Fair

The board of supervisors adopted protest resolutions against early fair dates. No change this year as dates remain set early. Acknowledgment of the protest may occur when the board of managers fixes next year's dates. Other counties in the peninsula have adopted similar protests.

The Wakefield township financial report covering March 15 1929 to March 15 1930 is published in this issue. It accounts for all receipts and expenditures by township officers for the last year and notes the annual election will be held Monday as required by law.

Kuivinen Named Assessor by City Mayor

William Kuivinen was re named city assessor by Mayor Y H Hanson at Wednesday’s commission meeting. The appointment was approved by the board. The same tax commissioners as last year were named S T Bonino and J S Wilde. The board of review will meet next month to consider property assessments.

1930 Campaign Tribute From Bessemer Official

The statement praises ladies across the county for campaign aid and thanks W Frank James for presenting the author’s name to the Government Postal department in Washington DC for the Bessemer post office. The concluding note asserts no quarrel with political opponents and wishes happiness and prosperity for the county, state, and nation. Dated at Bessemer Michigan March 81 1930.

Townships Set for Monday Balloting In County

The county townships vote next Monday with contests for multiple offices. Wakefield Township incumbents Fred K. Brandt and J. D. Porter face challengers William J. Weston and John Pollard, while William F. Johnson opposes Andrew Kronberg for treasurer. Polls open 7 AM to 5 PM at the Thomaaston town hall and noon hosts the taxpayers meeting to approve funds. In Marenisco, Toomey runs unopposed barring a late slip candidate. Toomey’s rivalries and slips shuffle slate.

Census Enumerators Allocate Wakefield District Among Ironwood Workers

Census takers in Wakefield are scarce so two Ironwood residents staff the fieldwork this week. The town is split into sections with James Hayes assigned the area west of Sunday Lake street and the Plymouth Wakefield iron mining zones.

Judge G O Driscoll directed a verdict for Iron National Bank for 1731 72 against Roy Bedell and Victor Peterson tied to a 5000 note on Bedell Motor Sales while Bedell claims 500 of that amount due to car parts and a 2000 parts agreement. Mac Donald wins 400 for January 31 collision with American Auto Co. Peltola gets 175 for October collision. Waples & Waples for Peterson, Hook for Shankey. Cleon Motor wins 120 against Niemi. Court to run into May with many cases remaining and spring weather ahead.

Rotary Anns Attend First Club Meeting

Wakefield Rotary club opened its first Rotary Ann program at the Community Building. Mayor Hanson was absent. total attendance reached 61 after guests arrived. H. L. Yvisaker chaired. readings by Miss Sherrod and Mr Erf, a vocal by Mr Obed Grender. R A Burns and J A Frederickson led games and dancing with the high school orchestra.

The Rev Father Szygula pastor of St Marys church sails from New York on the Europa in late April to visit relatives in Poland and spend the summer in Europe. He will attend the Passion Play at Oberammergau and visit Italy.

Sheriff Johnson Prohibition Case Expected in Short April Term

The April term of federal court at Marquette is expected to be brief with a single major case on the docket, Gogebic County Sheriff John W. Johnson facing a prohibition violation charge. Indicted in Sault Ste. Marie in January, Johnson's appeal claiming an illegal search warrant was denied by Judge Raymond, drawing wide Upper Peninsula interest as the first sheriff charged with such a violation.

Two Fatal Car Mishaps Shock Local County

Two deadly road accidents occurred in the county during the past week. Hugo Lehto, 14, died in a single vehicle collision on M-28 near Wakefield as a car swerved and toppled after the boy began driving. George Beddow, 72, was killed when his car, started by cranking, struck him at Ironwood near the Gogebic fruit store.
