The Valley Banner Turns 50 in Elkton

The Valley Banner, Elkton's long running paper, marks its 50th anniversary since Carl and Joyce Schumacher launched it in 1966 after moving from Orange. The couple later sold to John and Nita Edmondson in 1977. Patty Watson rose from reporter to editor before the 1986 sale to Rockingham Publishing Co.

Virginia Historical Society tour visits Elkton

Twenty three members of the Virginia Historical Society traveled from Richmond to Elkton to reenact Lt. Gov. Alexander Spotswood and the Knights of the Golden Horseshoe expedition. The See You on the Bus tour began in Richmond and included Germanna, Salubria, Swift Run Pass, and Elkton with stops at the Miller Kite House and a triangle memorial, recalling Spotswood's 1716 ascent and toast to King George I.

Elkton council eyes spending items for Monday meeting

Elkton council plans a slate of purchases and studies at its Monday session. Items include 115000 to replace 12 air conditioning units at the Elkton Area Community Center, 82446 to line sewer pipes on Rockingham Street, 76454 for an engineering study to prevent leaching into the Shenandoah River, 20000 for a storm drain trough on East Summit Avenue, and 5000 for fencing for the Ben Graessle basketball court near town hall.

Elkton Town councilwoman cites relocation costs to EACC

Councilwoman Margaretta Isom says Elkton Town has spent 18 659 and counting on new items for town staff after relocating to the EACC due to mold in town hall. Purchases include three desks phone wiring a door system and a storage building not in FY 2017 budget. See council page 13.

Sept 11 memory honors Elkton first responders

Elkton residents gathered at Stonewall Memorial Park to honor 9/11 victims, marking 15 years since the attacks. Mayor Wayne Printz led the event with police and fire units from multiple jurisdictions, flag ceremonies, and remarks praising first responders who sacrificed for the community.
