In Harrisonburg the Rockingham County Baseball League voted to readmit the Grottoes Cardinals to its eight team slate, with a 28 game per season cap. Organizers led by Jeremy Washington said sponsorship and community support are in place, noting a strong Grottoes baseball tradition.
A Rockingham County judge upheld a jury recommendation of 23 years for Wesley Williams, 30, convicted of attempting to kill former deputy J W Pultz and using a firearm during a felony. Williams plans to appeal. incident occurred near Elkton last summer with gunfire and a chase.
In a late August mock election at East Rockingham and Spotswood high schools Rockingham County Registrar Lisa Gooden registered 32 students set to be 18 by election day and conducted a government class vote. The tally split 130 130 on overturning the ban with Spotswood backing ending the ban 75 65 and East Rockingham favoring keeping it 55 65. The policy dispute remains tied up in the courts as the U S Supreme Court issued a stay of a lower court ruling.
Arnold a Minnesota native and retired electronic engineer teaches computer classes at the Shenandoah Computer Center. Since its opening over nine years ago he has guided senior citizens, many with no computer knowledge, through patient instruction on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Administrator Joyce Flaharty praises his calm method and persistence, noting some students have repeated classes but still learn. He enjoys the rewarding work and plans to continue.
