Elkton residents watch a heated campaign over where to house town offices. The Elkton Police Department moved to the Elkton Area Community Center after a pipe burst and mold was found, prompting a council move of all offices to the EACC on Blue and Gold Drive. An emergency session approved a $60,000 plan for a 24 car parking lot to serve the new setup.
Harrisonburg Elkton plans a boundary expansion to gain about six acres on Spotswood Trail US 33. The plan covers four Rockingham County parcels south of US 33, west of Solsburg Road, and north of Rockingham Pike. The town aims to extend water and sewer for a developing business area, with developer Bill Neff named by Mayor Wayne Printz. A public hearing is set for Oct 17 at 6 45 p.m.
Mike Lowe, who served on Shenandoah City Council from 2003 to 2006 after appointment and later won a term in 2010, faced questions about his candidacy for re election in November. He resigned on May 30, 2014, just weeks after winning a second term, amid recent personal and financial concerns.
The Keezletown Ruritan Club funds a new nonprofit at Spotswood High School. About 20 people attended a school auditorium event where 32 Spotswood students signed the Ruriteen Club charter. Ruriteen, an offshoot of Ruritan, focuses on service with funds aiding students and community groups. Senior Nate Riddle emphasizes giving to others.
Seventh and eighth graders from Elkton and Wilburn Peace middle schools visited James Madison University for CyberDay. Participants worked in computer labs ate on campus and lived on campus for a day, experiencing college life as part of the CyberCity Program led by College of Business staff. The program, now a one day event held four times a year, aims to spark interest in technology fields among Virginia youth.
