A collection of Christian reflections contrasts world class versus worldly Christians with a call to global mission. It includes a parable about a millionaire offering his daughter or a million to swim a pool of alligators, then a joke and two brain teasers with a closing note inviting email questions.
Frances Dovel of Elkton condemns council for sharply raising utility rates amid recession. She criticizes planned town manager car purchase, high salary, and nonresident hire while residents, including seniors, struggle to pay bills. She urges accountability and respectful public hearings.
A letter thanks organizers volunteers and the Elkton Area Community Center for hosting the fourth annual Elkton Chili Cookoff. The note highlights Epilepsy Foundation of Virginia leader Suzanne Bischoff and a $1,000 prize, plus gratitude to the cookers and the sender’s family for support.
Shenandoah plans a 9 a.m. Memorial Day service at Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8613 featuring patriotic music prayers and a possible guest speaker. A flag dedication and handshakes with surviving veterans follow, with family activities in town after the ceremony. Clinton O Lucas Jr. Shenandoah mayor invites all to attend.
Roy E. Davis critiques Elkton campaign rhetoric likening it to a 17 year locust cycle four years after the last election. He accuses certain officials of using promises to justify high rates and outsized spending, claiming a $100,000 budget cut is trivial and debt-prone, urging skepticism. He argues real reform would bypass hollow slogans and costly projects.
A resident questions Mr Printz about the $600 pool table covering cost and the source of funding. The writer notes three years of Friday or Saturday pool tournaments raised funds for covers and asserts the center remains a community triumph despite criticism. About $975 was spent on covers, with over $2,000 raised by volunteers for the center.
