Town seeks bids for wastewater plant upgrade

Elkton town council discussed three bids for phase two of the wastewater plant upgrade at a workshop held at The Alley Building. WW Associates presented bids from 3.027 to 3.635 million, with MEB General Contractors submitting the low bid. The project, funded by 3.1 million in bonds, adds clarifiers and a digester at 15917 Old Spotswood Trail and includes SCADA integration.

Paint the Town Purple fundraiser in Elkton

Businesses are urged to decorate in purple April 18 to 22 for an American Cancer Society fundraiser. Elkton’s Allison Morris says purple love bows are sold at town hall and the Elkton Area Community Center for 3 dollars each or 5 dollars for two. Bows honor survivors, fighters, and memory of loved ones. they will be placed on the town tree on Rockingham Street across from town hall for an April 20 ceremony at 1 p.m.

Shenandoah council and staff begin preliminary FY2017 budget

Shenandoah Town Council and staff started work on a preliminary budget for Fiscal Year 2017 this week. Councilmen Lynn Fox Richard Pierce and Mayor Clinton O Lucas Jr weighed in on the proposed 2.13 million budget which includes 1.396 million for general expenses and potential budget cuts.

Town Faces Utility Shortfall and Rate Hikes

Nye reports a shortfall with utilities totaling 737,429 dollars and Pierce proposes raising water sewer and trash bills by one dollar monthly. Council already increased water and sewer charges by a dollar per month in each of the last two years. Fox cites input from over 100 residents and urges cutting donations to local groups to direct savings toward debt repayment.
