Grottoes hikes sewer rate as wastewater plant opens
The town raises the bi monthly base sewer rate from 31.25 to 35.94 dollars, with 8,000 gallon users seeing about a 16 dollar bi monthly increase. Each added 1,000 gallons adds 3 cents water and 6 cents sewer. New rates reach 1.85 for water and 3.47 for sewer per unit, reflecting a 2.5 million plant funded by a Virginia Revolving Loan Fund loan and an DEQ grant, part of a three year phase in with 15 percent base rate increases planned for 2017 and 2018. Water haulers will pay 12.47 after a 23 cent per load rise. The article also notes a canceled Battle of the Bands and summer park events including Country in the Park and bluegrass nights at Mountain View Park. Push, Pedal and Pull Parade remains set for July 4 at 10 a.m.

Flood ordinance changes pass second reading in Elkton
Elkton approves updates to the flood hazard ordinance requiring developers in the 100-year floodplain to show no impact on nearby properties. New buildings must have the lowest floor at least one foot above the floodplain or be flood-proof, following the National Flood Insurance Program model. Whitfield expects bids for a town recycling contract as the current three-year deal ends in July.
