Chesapeake Western locomotive No. 102’s long service life
A 42 ton Richmond Locomotive Works 4 4 0 engine built in 1895, nicknamed Lizzie Allison, carried No 102 for Chesapeake Western Railway from 1934 to 1938. Engineer Melvin Sigafoose earned 45 cents hourly, and 25 cent passenger fares covered a 42 mile round trip aboard renovated Norfolk & Western cars. The unit was scrapped in 1938 as steam gave way to diesels. CW’s final steam engine followed in 1947.
