Council leaves seat vacant for special election in Shenandoah
Shenandoah Town Council votes 5-0 to keep the seat of former Councilman I. Mike Lowe empty until a special election. Papers due August 15 at the county registrar. Lowe resigned May 30 citing personal matters. Lowe, 46, had a lengthy council tenure and prior election history. The Page News and Courier notes a 1990 felony conviction cited in county records. Commonwealth's Attorney Ken Alger commented as the process continues.

Elkton Emergency Squad plans fourth poker run on Saturday
The Elkton Emergency Squad will hold its fourth annual poker run this Saturday to raise funds. With 25 members, registration is 15 dollars and 5 dollars for each additional rider. The route starts at 10 am from 20871 Blue and Gold Drive and travels through US 340 US 211 Route 11 Route 55 toward Woodstock Strasburg Front Royal Luray and back to Elkton.

Dream come true training horses opens in Page County
Josie Hoffman, 22, opens RE Sporthorses at Mountaintop Ranch east of Shenandoah offering dressage jumping event and cross country training. She rode since age eight and studied with top riders in Michigan and Virginia before starting the business in May near Front Royal. Hoffman plans to marry Aug. 2 and relocated from Grand Haven Michigan to Virginia in 2012.

Birmingham resident Henry E. Simpson who helped preserve Port Republics Civil War battlefield was remembered at Grace Memorial Episcopal Church.
