Elkton town council discussed adding a pet cemetery at Elk Run to keep the cemetery fund solvent. Town Manager Kevin Whitfield warned the cemetery fund could be out of money in three years and urged treating the operation as a business to avoid blame.
Elkton town officials warned the cemetery fund loses 15000 to 20000 yearly. They weigh running the cemetery at a loss or innovative measures including discounts on plots costing 600 each, up from 400 in 2005, plus 400 to dig and fill graves. Proposals include selling town land and offering incentives like buy two get one half off as cremations rise.
ELKTON planners push edits to the floodplain ordinance after public opposition to controversial provisions. The commission seeks adjustments to regulate flood hazards and protect the town, citing concerns raised by residents and local stakeholders.
The Planning Commission voted 5-0 to recommend changes behind Tannery Apartments requiring developers in Elkton's 100-year floodplain to prove no impact on existing nearby development. Chair Dan Talbot cited an agreement with Rockingham County guiding the process.
George Billhimer, 90, opened the radio sales and repair shop in 1949 and recalls hearing voices predicting it would not last. Republicans and independents in eastern Rockingham and Page counties face a June 9 primary for State Senate District 24. Incumbent Emmett Hanger is challenged by Dan Moxley and Marshall Pattie. Registration closes May 18. Absentee voting starts April 24. by mail deadline June 2, in person until June 6 at the county election office. No Democrat filed in this race.
SHS Principal Steve Leaman announced his retirement effective July 1 after 36 years in education. A Harrisonburg, Virginia, native, he has led Spotswood since 2012 and plans to pursue a slower pace. An interim successor has not been named.
Elkton Middle School FFA members competed Friday and Saturday in the State 4 H and FFA Block and Bridle Livestock and Stockman's Judging Contests on the Virginia Tech campus in Blacksburg. The Elkton team placed seventh in Stockman’s Contest among 46 teams with Colton Allison taking sixth in judging and questions, sixth in Quiz and ID, and fourth overall individually.
