The People's Baptist Church Walnut Hills explains in a public article how false reports circulated after July 7 when pastor Rev Johnson of 1216 Garfield Ave Middletown was dismissed by four deacons without church consent. Deacons were removed from office and members locked out of the Preston Street building. The church learned trustee Charles Taylor had rented church space in his own name, denying a formal rental agreement with the U B F Lodge.
A group led by Brother and Sister Taylor secured a court order to remove furnishings from Preston street buildings and reestablish as The People's Missionary Baptist Church. Eight original members remain, forming a new congregation while the former People's Baptist Church operates from Gordon at Chapel and Ashland with Rev. L. W. Johnson as pastor. The permanent church organized August 31, 1921, and holds a state charter. Services grow under a hopeful, faith-filled spirit as the church asserts its rights and invites attendance.
Horace Suddith, a Batesville Ind broker, sold an 8 room brick at 736 Barr Street to Thomas and Annie Payne and an 8 room brick with two flats at 1210 Myrtle Avenue in Walnut Hills for Raymond Barrett of Cleveland. Minnie Maddis purchased Walnut Hills lot and Mrs Lottie Davis’s lot at 3055 Mentor Street for Wade H Hill. Edw L Thomas sold his 946 Churchill Avenue flat to John Walton. Harold Taylor’s 4312 Beech Hill property went to Edith Dillman for home use. Charles Jones of Skillman NJ sold 1609 Baymiller Street cottage to Amanda Young for home use. Agnes Liggins sold property at 1155 and 1137 Lin to Philadelphia buyer planning a garage next year.
Clark County Courts recognize a divorce between Charles Lowry and his wife on grounds of cruelty and alleged voodoo practices. Testimony cited include lashings with a buggy whip, smearing with household items, mysterious substances in food, and occult rites. Papers mention written prayers and charms placed under the door mat and elaborate ceremonies as part of the allegations.
The passage mocks white voodooists and contrasts how the press would react if they were black. It claims mysterious substances in food were used to win love but may have failed due to age. It also mentions a woman who should face arrest under pure food laws.
