The New Roosevelt Theatre costs over 167000 dollars to build with 950 seats and upgraded dressing rooms and rest facilities. It features six boxes eight loges and offers first run pictures from major studios with 40 cent top seats and a payroll near 700 dollars weekly.
John B Bruner head of the Lincoln Amusement Company refuses a demand to hire only white stage hands for The New Roosevelt. Union threats to pull machines fail as Bruner foresees the move and has trained colored workers ready. The blow off ends with his team running the show without white labor.
Henry Dixon, assistant to manager Henry, is described as bright, polite, aspiring and eager to learn. The piece casts him as a promising young man with a splendid opportunity to demonstrate his abilities and make good.
The National Colored Vaudeville Association met during the week of the new Roosevelt opening and attended in a body. Members praised Roosevelt and placed his theater in the front rank of playhouses of its class. Milton G. Starr, owner of three Nashville theatres, serves as president.
The Lincoln Theatre presents The Palace of Fifth Street and The Pride of Colored Theatres as its home of super special feature pictures. Prices on the first floor are 20 cents and 15 cents in the balcony. Matinees run daily from 2 to 5 PM, evenings 7 to 10:30 PM.
Sunday and midweek showings present The Valley of Lost Souls a dramatic tale with pathos and thrill plus a comedy Important Lover. Within the Law stars Norma Talmage and a renowned cast, previously mounted by the Lafayette Players with richer production and scenes not stageable.
Nine years ago the Lincoln Amusement Company formed to address race-based seating prejudices in theatres. Prominent financier Rehbun and promoter Bruner backed a plan for a theatre open to all races, leading to the Lincoln Theatre and later the Roosevalt site. The Roosevelt Theatre advertises itself as the most beautiful in the West with 950 seats and two shows nightly. Schedule includes September 16 making a man with Jack Holt and Eva Novak, September 17 and 18 Restless Souls with a comedy Pirate, and September 19 to 21 Penrod and Sam featuring Buddy Alexander and Sunshiney Sammy.
A lively ad-style notice touts an Andrew Holt film with tears and laughs as the town’s “greatest kid” stars, plus a Saturday Sunday Sept 22 23 showing. It promises a love story with vigor and a vaudeville lineup featuring Magnolia Brown Lilly May Brown Johnson Elliotte and Elinor Carpond, the Nightingale of California.
