Army boxing champion Levi Jackson Jr. earned the Distinguished Service Cross in Korea at age 24. As a medical aid man with Co. G, Twenty-fifth Infantry, he repeatedly exposed himself to North Korean fire to rescue wounded soldiers near Haman, shielding them with his body before being mortally wounded. He was lauded as a hero and undefeated champion of the Twenty-fifth Division.

50 Million Increase In September Social Security Checks
Nearly three million recipients will receive September old age and survivors insurance payments totaling a $50 million boost over August. Federal Security Administrator Oscar R. Ewing announced the monthly checks are delivered within a week after month end, usually by the third of the next month. The law raises benefits for both current and past beneficiaries.

Urban League trustees vote to drop Albany council
The National Urban League Board of Trustees discontinued its affiliation with the Albany Interracial Council and admitted the Community Relations Project of Winston-Salem, North Carolina.
