The Christian Science Monitor lauds W E B Du Bois darkwater as a landmark collection of essays and poems on race. It highlights its wide appeal across sociologists readers and both Black and white audiences, noting its democratic call and enduring literary value.
Henry M. Higgins has been selected by the Hamilton County Ex. Com. as a candidate. A prominent citizen, he has played an active political role for more than twenty five years.
Dr C V Roman arrives in Cincinnati to speak at Memorial Services at the Y on Sunday May 320th. He is billed as a leading speaker and author with roles as lecturer for the U S Government and Brac.
Nationally known author presents a 500 page study on American Civilization and the Negro drawing favorable press notes. Capt T A Christen of the Military Intelligence Division and French Consul at Cincinnati will be the other speaker. The event aims to honor those who died for us with a strong appeal for sustaining membership, already over twenty five men enlisted at $10 per year.
A white Alabama student writes from Nashville and Cincinnati, describing travel northward and encounters with Black people. The letter uses racial slurs and mocks northern life, contrasting harshly with her Dixie loyalty and ending with a sentimental sign-off to a friend.
The article states that others will come forth on June 1st and that next week’s issue will publish the names of those who have already responded generously to the appeal.
Washington May 13 Prediction that the next years would see lynching and mob violence eliminated if whites and blacks keep their feet on the ground and maintain level heads in these days of stress and strain was made by Dr Robert R Mason principal of Tuskegee Institute in an address before the Southern Sociological Congress.
A statement by Dr Moton remarks that the end to lift the Negro requires an invention to keep him grounded when mobs rise to challenge his ascent. The remark highlights civil rights tensions as the nation contemplates progress and resistance.
A white man and Deputy Sheriff were fatally and mortally wounded in a night clash between whites and Negroes following an alleged attempt to arrest a Negro. The confrontation occurred after the Negro’s daughter was arrested earlier for striking a white woman. The suspect fired on officers in the Negro settlement, killing H. C. Butler, an automobile salesman, and mortally wounding Deputy Sheriff W. G. Moore.
The speaker denies any involvement with a colored hospital project, clarifying ignorance of its internal details while directing inquirers to Colley and other promoters for information. The tone emphasizes neutrality and public responsibility amid inquiries.
Clarence Cothron and his wife Grace were sentenced to life imprisonment in Maryland for the June killing of Homer Jones, a Black chauffeur near Rockville. Cothron, already serving life for killing John Weiden, and Grace, in for kidnapping, killed Jones after a bank robbery attempt was thwarted.
The 23%th anniversary of Tuskegee marked a milestone from the 20th to 23rd inst, described as probably the greatest in its history.
