A historical note extols basket ball as a fine game introduced in the Dabney Building on McAllister Street. It urges politeness from players and crowd, praises fair officiating, and condemns rowdy conduct in sports settings. It calls for sportsmanship and toasts to fair play.
Dr Gilbert H Jones dean at Wilberforce University wrote a German language thesis on Lotz and Browne praised as a masterpiece of psychological research. Harvard and Boston University seek to use or translate it while a copy remains in Harvard library. He is among few Americans and the only Afro-American to earn a foreign PhD. He authored several textbooks. The Gavette notes a letter urging Lent observances and evangelical self denial with appeals for aid to evangelize Negroes and Indians.
Lent begins on Ash Wednesday with Catholics receiving ashes and the phrase into dust thou shalt return. The season includes Good Friday and ends on Easter Sunday, April 16, with observances March 25 to April 13 and Holy Saturday April 6. Archbishop Moeller called Friday to all priests in his diocese.
The Cincinnati Walnut Hills klan receives its first full charter as the first of nine in the city to gain a 1000 member roll. Philadelphia January 13 report says Amos Scott as Philadelphia's first nonwhite municipal judge faces high public belief tests. His early docket shows novel handling of questions and the arrest of a young Black desperado who killed two New York detectives. The piece asserts strong Black legal intellect.
The author argues against judging whites by a single standard, says discrimination stems from class and ignorance, and asserts miscegenation shows shared humanity. He urges elevating self, embracing progress toward American citizenship, and believes both races can advance with mutual support and education. Dabney.
Rev Edgar Merrill Brown pastor of Dietz Memorial Methodist Church speaks to his congregation amid divorce suit by his wife charging cruelty. He says it takes nerve and bravery to face marriage today and urges teamwork to prevent wrecked homes. He notes both sides must have nerve and references changing morals and attire.
London reported Egypt has become an independent sovereign state with specified reservations, with the British Government terminating its protectorate subject to those terms. Lord Allenby informed the sultan of Egypt of the change today. The story notes themes of liberty and world-wide change.
The Cincinnati District Missionary Convention meets March 4 and 5 at Pilgrim Baptist Church McAllister Street with Rev. Harvey Miller as pastor. Women’s work for Christ and humanity will be showcased and the Ohio Women's Baptist State Convention discussed.
The Ku Klux Klan of Cincinnati and Southern Ohio will travel to Dayton on Thursday night for an initiation ceremony. Reports indicate about 400 candidates from Dayton, Hamilton, Xenia and nearby cities. Cincinnati Klan No. 2 will oversee the ritual.
Cincinnati branch NAACP and Antioch Baptist Church announce a March 6 meeting at 5 p.m. with investigator Slater outlining Holt case. Memorial services for Col Charles Young are set for Sunday March 12 at 3 p.m. at Union Baptist Church under NAACP auspices led by Rev B F Smith. President E Johnson, Secretary.
