Rescue at Sea A Bishop Hartzell Heroic Sailor Save
In 1864 Bishop Joseph C. Hartzell undertook a perilous rescue during a twelve hour gale on Lake Michigan. He swam through ice cold breakers to reach a stranded lumber schooner, climbed a mast to reach ropes, and helped four sailors reach shore despite freezing waters. The captain thanked him, Evanston citizens later honored him with an encyclopedia set, and Hartzell later published his account in 1890.
