A Black man, 47 named Tilden "Big" Murphy, died after a sharp-object incident in his room at Sixth and Broadway. A previously unknown escape involved a Black woman sliding down a rope from a window to safety. Police state the injury was minor, and the cause of death remains under investigation.
Tenants saw a woman appear at a third floor window in the building attach a rope, climb through, and slide to safety on the sidewalk before fleeing. Police note a hatpin as the weapon and warn that a scorned woman can be deadly, quoting famous lines about female fury.

Marcus Garvey’s imprisonment fuels shifting sentiment among African Americans. H L Keith editor of the Pittsburg American, a leading Negro weekly, will speak Friday night August 17 at Emery Auditorium in Cincinnati under the Universal Negro Improvement Association auspices.

He evacuates guests and wakes a sleeping man, who is later dragged to safety. The resident curses aloud on waking, prompting Thomas to eject the man into the street. A warrant for J B Horton on charges of abusing May Horton led to a fatal gunfight with John Cornett at Fifth and Smith streets. Horton, 625 West Fourth, fired four shots as Cornett spoke to May Horton, dying almost instantly. May Horton had sought arrest earlier at City Hall.
