In Dayton Ohio July 8 Gov Cox and Franklin D Roosevelt gain traction with Colored Democrats. The piece notes shift from Southern preferences to Cox Roosevelt as standard bearers, plus local primary filings and party dynamics across counties.
Special to Tulsa Star reports that in Muskogee Oklahoma Colored citizens filed a full black Republican county ticket opposing the white Republican slate. W H Twine and others moved to file for every county office shortly after county chairman Myron White fled the white ticket. Twine pledged to oppose the white delegates and show Harding's allies that Negroes will not be squeezed.
A fire originating in the Colored business area of Lin Beggs, Okla, destroyed four frame buildings and damaged three in the white district. Suspected incendiary act, water cut, delayed response, and cross-district tension cited. Loss estimated near $860,000. Fire service aided by Okmulgee and Sayalpa.
Colored Tammanyite Oscar Waters attended the Democratic National Convention as Doorkeeper for the New York delegation. He faced expense gaps compared with Chicago delegates and drew publicity in San VCont.
Most Worshipful St John Grand Lodge announces the Twentyth Annual Grand Session in the Masonic Temple at Busey Oklahoma on August 10 11 12 1920. Members and Lodges of Ancient Free and Accepted Masons for Oklahoma are summoned to labor and govern themselves accordingly. KH Emmet Stewart Grand Master.
Reported negotiations in Mexico involve officials from De La Huerta and Gateame of the pow, with a conference near Mexico City about an armistice. No formal communication from Heltran. private messages suggest agreement reached and a possible official nomination.
In Paris Texas a mob stormed the jail and burned two African American men after a dispute over debt to a farmer. Sheriff Clarkson and County Attorney Bur Harkey said the two men may have admitted the killing while in jail, but officials doubted they were the Hodges killers.
Langston University marked Independence Day with a campus festival on July 4 featuring a dedication ceremony for multiple buildings, a formal procession, national songs, and student stunts. Notable attendees included President Marquis and Guthrie official Jade C. Sadth, with performances by Langston students and guests from Oklahoma City.
In Baltimore July, republican leaders faced tension after a city vote over Black participation and a demand for constable appointments. They pushed for positions on the police and local commissions, but Mayor Bruening remained silent on these demands, fueling discontent among the Go Brethren.
The baton bol session adjourned without tangible action on women’s suffrage or voting rights. No resolutions or measures advanced, leaving suffrage status unchanged and status quo maintained.
