Mississippi governor demands college deny integration
Mississippi Governor Ross Barnett presses the state college board to defy the Supreme Court and bar James Meredith from joining the University of Mississippi. The board, split, faced contempt threats as federal order loomed. At Oxford, Chancellor Williams warned of expulsion for demonstrators while Meredith prepared to transfer.
