Fire devastates southern Japan department store killing nearly 100
A blaze at Taiyo Department Store in Kumamoto, Kyushu, started around 1:30 p.m. as Christmas decorations fed the flames. Ninety nine bodies, including women and men, were recovered, with many victims leaping or trapped on upper floors. Fire prevention upgrades were underway. no sprinkler or alarm systems were yet in place. Helicopters, ladders, and rescuers aided civilians fleeing the blaze as televised footage captured the tragedy.

Parole Set for Clifford Irving in Hughes Hoax Case
The UPI report states the U.S. Parole Board granted Clifford Irving parole for February 14. Irving, 42, was sentenced in 1972 to two years and six months for defrauding McGraw-Hill with a fake Howard Hughes biography. His wife Edith remains jailed in Switzerland for involvement in the scheme.

Senate votes to raise retired worker earning limit
The Senate approved an $3,000 annual earnings limit for retirees without cutting Social Security, attached to a bill boosting benefits by 11 percent in two steps. Only Sen. Carl Curtis, R-Neb., opposed. The package calls for a 7 percent increase on enactment and a further 4 percent later.
