A 16 story Rault Center blaze trapped workers on the top floors with six dead including five who jumped to escape. One victim burned on the 14th floor as flames spread. three others were critically injured, and rescuers battled flames for hours in misty rain.
A rooftop blaze at a Middletown structure drew rescuers to pull seven people to safety from the roof near an adjoining Howard Johnsons. Fire units battled flames as victims leaped from several floors and a priest said rites were performed for five, with no fatal burn injuries reported among the rescued.
